February Newsletter #3

Josh Sorensen

Hello LASC Families,

We are looking forward to having our Jr. Horns return this week as well as a return to our normal pool configuration set up. The cold snap seems to be over as we head towards March and some exciting upcoming meets.

Meet Recap - Western Transmountain Festival

We had just under 20 swimmers compete this past weekend at the Western Transmountain Festival on the weekend at the Brookfeild YMCA in South Calgary. The two day affair was the third installment of the WTF series over the last couple weeks in Calgary. The meet featured over 500 swimmers from across Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan. LASC swimmers came to compete with every swimmer hitting at least one of either a lifetime or season's best result. Despite bringing a small crew, the team made their presence known through their cheering and determined efforts. Along the way we saw a few swimmers hit some exciting new qualifying times. Calyn Lothian and Jake Odorski both picked up Jr. Trial cuts allowing them to compete at Canadian National Team Trial Meets, meanwhile Kate Hill picked up a USports time, meaning she will be eligible to compete at University Nationals when she joins the Pronghorns for next season.

LASC H2Oh Yeah, Cash! Raffle

We are still looking for families to sell booklets for our upcoming cash raffle with a draw date of March 28th. Each booklet contains 10 tickets at $10 a ticket ($100 a book). We have some significant cash prizes up for grabs with the Top 3 Prizes being $3000, $1000, and $500, respectively.

A big bonus for all the families selling the tickets, for each booklet you sell, $70 goes towards your fundraising commitment. And you are able to sell multiple booklets, so you can make quite a dent in that commitment with a few books.

To purchase your book(s), please e-transfer [email protected] and include your family name and ‘cash raffle booklet’ in the note section.

After purchasing a raffle book, you can pick them up from Gilliam Laird or Lindsay O’Brien in the pool viewing gallery at the following times:

Monday & Friday: 4:30 - 6:00 PM

Tuesday & Thursday: 5:00 - 6:00 PM

Saturday: 9:30 - 10:30 AM

There are no refunds on unsold tickets.

All tickets stubs must be returned to Gillian or Lindsay by March 21st before the draw on Friday, March 28th.

If you have any further questions, please reach out to Lindsay at [email protected]

Upcoming Meets

We have updated our Event page to include all of the up to date information we have on meets until our Mid-Season break in April.

Winter Provincial Trials (Mar 7-9th)

Our first of two Provincial Meets this month, we have 11 swimmers qualified and ready to go for Provincial Trials in Calgary. It is an exciting heats and finals short course meet with swimmers who win their event qualifying for Provincial Championships two weeks later.

Pronghorn Classic (Mar 14-16th)

We are happy to be getting ready for our first home meet of the season. Everyone in the competitive stream will be entered into this meet automatically so no need to worry about registering. However, if you know you will not be there for the meet, please decline the meet on our event page so we do not add the swimmer. It’s a 4 session meet with one session on Friday Afternoon, two sessions on Saturday and a final session on Sunday morning. Friday will be raced as short course, while Saturday and Sunday will be long course racing,

Winter Provincial Championships (Mar 21-23rd)

Our second Provincial Meet in March, we have 19 swimmers qualified for and ready to go for Provincial Championships in Edmonton. This is a 4 day, heats and finals meet and serves as the pinnacle of competition for age group swimming in Alberta. Hopefully we will add to our list of qualifiers following Provincial Trials.

Friday Night Races (Mar 28th)

Our next installment of Friday Night Races will take place on March 28th. We will be doing the LASC H2Oh Yeah Cash! Raffle draw during Friday Night Races as well.

Bridge City Spring Classic - Saskatoon (April 10-13th)

Thank you to all those who registered for the Bridge City Spring Classic in Saskatoon. It looks like it is going to be an exciting 3 day meet with heats and finals racing at the beautiful Shaw Centre in Sunny Saskatoon. For those who signed up for Team Travel, we are still on the search for a chaperone in order to make the accommodations work. If you would be interested, please reach out as soon as possible to make sure we can make the team travel happen. We will still be attending the meet through personal travel means if we are unable to organize team travel.

Take care and swim fast!

Josh
