March Newsletter #1

Josh Sorensen

Hello LASC Families,

Welcome to our next month of the season, March, and with it comes plenty of fast and exciting racing for all swimmers in the club! We have a busy month upcoming with two Provincial Championship meets, a home meet, Friday Night Races, and other items on our agenda.

Practice Cancellations

The Max Bell Mantas are hosting a Lifesaving Club meet at the University Pool this weekend. Due to the pool being booked out, there will be NO SATURDAY Morning practices for all groups this upcoming March 8th.

Swimmer of the Month

Olympic Way - 1

Mya Jerred - Mya has made some great improvements throughout the month of February. Mya works hard at practice everyday and does a great job at listening to the coach’s feedback. We are excited to see her race at the Pronghorn Classic in a couple weeks! Congrats Mya!

-Sophie

Olympic Way - 2

Rhys Pinder - The swimmer of the month for OW1 is Rhys Pinder. Rhys has been working hard on his technique and lane leading skills this month. His strong attendance and hard work has paid off as he saw some impressive results at the Maverick Madness meet getting very close to qualifying for Festivals and qualifying for a lot of final events, including progressing on in a few rounds of the 25 eliminator. Rhys has proven to be a great asset to the group as he is our designated helper when fins get lost at the bottom of the pool! We can’t wait to watch you improve even more throughout the rest of the season! Keep up the great work!

-Kaila

Provincial

Nyah Nickel - Nyah always comes to practice with a smile and a determination to get better. She works hard on every set and asks for feedback often. At swim meets, she can be found encouraging her teammates and cheering for everyone. Her kindness and manners were noticed by officials at the recent Maverick Madness meet too. Keep up the good work Nyah!

-Tara and Parker

Jr. National

Priya Walper - Priya has done a wonderful job over the last couple months to see herself winning swimmer of the month for the Jr. National group. A very productive month, Priya swam herself to a number of best times at the Maverick Madness meet, knocking almost a minute and a half of time off her combined entry times across 6 events. While racing very well at that meet, Priya also found herself as a recipient of an award from the officials for her on deck etiquette and friendliness with the officials, volunteers, and other swimmers. She finds herself closer to those Festival and Trials cuts every time she dives in, and if she keeps up the positive attitude and determined work ethic that we’ve been seeing on a daily basis, a breakthrough will be coming in no time!

National

Kya Pratt - After a whirlwind of a month, Kya enters March with a bit of a rest having taken on 3 meets within a 4 weekend span. At the first meet of the month, UCSC Grand Prix, Kya had a fantastic 50 Backstroke to qualify her for Championships along with time drops in a few other events. Just one week later at the Maverick Madness, she came out with full steam, racing to more best times, along with the overall win in the 50 Free eliminator. Finally, she wrapped up her busy February with the Western Transmountain Festival in Calgary where she competed in 6 more events, adding another PB along with the race experience. She has a bit of a break from competition now before she comes back at Pronghorn Classic and Alberta Provincial Championships later this month.

Later this week we have 11 swimmers qualified and racing in Calgary for Winter Provincial Trials. It is an exciting heats and finals short course meet with swimmers who win their event qualifying for Provincial Championships two weeks later. We are excited to see all the fast swimming that we have been getting ready for!

USports - Toronto (Mar 7-9th)

Head Coach Peter is off with the UofL Pronghorns to compete at University National Championships (USports). You can stream the action live this weekend as the Horns go toe-to-toe with the best in the nation. We have a few LASC graduates representing the Horns with Raine Arden, Meadow Liversuch, Makena Wood, and Amelie Gouttin and we wish them and their teammates the best of luck this weekend.

Pronghorn Classic (Mar 14-16th)

We are happy to be getting ready for our first home meet of the season. Everyone in the competitive stream will be entered into this meet automatically so no need to worry about registering. However, if you know you will not be there for the meet, please decline the meet on our event page so we do not add the swimmer. It’s a 4 session meet with one session on Friday Afternoon, two sessions on Saturday and a final session on Sunday morning. Friday will be raced as short course, while Saturday and Sunday will be long course racing.

Winter Provincial Championships - Edmonton (Mar 21-23rd)

Our second Provincial Meet in March, we have 19 swimmers qualified for and ready to go for Provincial Championships in Edmonton. This is a 4 day, heats and finals meet and serves as the pinnacle of competition for age group swimming in Alberta. Hopefully we will add to our list of qualifiers following Provincial Trials.

Our next installment of Friday Night Races will take place on March 28th. Our LASC H2Oh Yeah Cash! Raffle draw will occur during the Friday Night Races as well.

Bridge City Spring Classic - Saskatoon (April 10-13th)

Thank you to all those who registered for the Bridge City Spring Classic in Saskatoon. It looks like it is going to be an exciting 3 day meet with heats and finals racing at the beautiful Shaw Centre in Sunny Saskatoon. For those who signed up for Team Travel, we are still on the search for a chaperone in order to make the accommodation work. If you would be interested, please reach out as soon as possible to make sure we can make the team travel happen. We will still be attending the meet through personal travel means if we are unable to organize team travel.

Canadian Open - Edmonton (April 10-13th)

The three day meet will feature the best swimmers across the country getting valuable race experience against one another as they prep for Trials and International events upcoming in the summer.

Take care and swim fast!
