March Newsletter #3
Hello LASC Families,
Meet Recap
Pronghorn Classic
Nearly 80 LASC swimmers took to the pool this past weekend to race in both short course and long course events at the Pronghorn Classic. We were excited and happy to host our first meet of the year here at home and the swimmers came through with excellent results. The weekend marked a number of firsts as many swimmers tackled a new event for the first time or saw themselves racing a familiar event in long course meters for the first time. The Friday session saw some quick sprinting from the club as they tackled 50m and 100m events in the short pool. Saturday and Sunday was a switch into Long Course and it was a great opportunity for swimmers to get themselves adjusted to the change in racing landscapes. Many of our meets going forward this season will now be long course so we were happy to see swimmers get some practice in. Throughout the meet we saw best times over and over again and smiles from our swimmers all weekend long. A very big thank you to all of our volunteers for helping out at our meet. It takes a large number of people and a lot of man-hours to run these meets and we are very grateful for everyone who stepped up and helped out. We’re already looking forward to our next hosted meet, the LASC Spring Challenge in May.
LASC H2Oh Yeah, Cash! Raffle
This is the last week to purchase and return ticket stubs for our club fundraising raffle. All tickets stubs must be returned to Gilliam or LIndsay by March 21st, this Friday, for the Draw on Friday, March 28th.
Each booklet contains 10 tickets at $10 a ticket. We have some significant cash prizes up for grabs with the Top 3 Prizes being $3000, $1000, and $500 respectively.
A big bonus for all the families selling the tickets, for each booklet you sell, $70 goes towards your fundraising commitment as well. And you are able to sell multiple booklets, so you can make quite a dent in that commitment with a few books.
To purchase a book, please e-transfer [email protected] and include your family name and ‘cash raffle booklet’ in the note section so we can file the money properly.
After purchasing a raffle book, you can pick them up from Gilliam Laird or Lindsay O’Brien in the pool viewing gallery at the following times:
Monday & Friday: 4:30 - 6:00 PM
Tuesday & Thursday: 5:00 - 6:00 PM
There are no refunds on unsold tickets.
If you have any further questions, please reach out to Lindsay at [email protected]
We have updated our Event page to include all of the up to date information we have on meets until our Mid-Season break in April. As well, there is a link to a PDF with all of the meets we have during the season here.
Winter Provincial Championships - Edmonton (Mar 21-23rd)
Our next meet up is the Provincial Championships this weekend in Edmonton. We have 22 swimmers qualified and we are excited to see some fast racing out of the crew. The 4 day, heats and finals meet serves as the pinnacle of competition for age group swimming in Alberta. We wish the swimmers the best of luck as they go take on the best this weekend.
Friday Night Races (Mar 28th)
Our next installment of Friday Night Races will take place on March 28th. We will be doing the LASC H2Oh Yeah Cash! Raffle draw during Friday Night Races as well.
Bridge City Spring Classic - Saskatoon (April 10-13th)
Thank you to all those who registered for the Bridge City Spring Classic in Saskatoon. It looks like it is going to be an exciting 3 day meet with heats and finals racing at the beautiful Shaw Centre in Sunny Saskatoon. For those who signed up for Team Travel, we are still on the search for a chaperone in order to make the accommodation work. If you would be interested, please reach out as soon as possible to make sure we can make the team travel happen. We will still be attending the meet through personal travel means if we are unable to organize team travel.
Canadian Open - Edmonton (April 10-13th)
One of Swim Canada’s premier long course racing competitions, we have 6 swimmers qualified for the upcoming Canadian Open in Edmonton. The three day meet will feature the best swimmers across the country getting valuable race experience against one another as they prep for Trials and International events upcoming in the summer.
Take care and swim fast!
