April Newsletter #1
Hello LASC Families,
Welcome to our first newsletter of the month. April is a bit of a lighter month with our mid-season break occuring from Apirl 18th - 27th, but we still have a few meets this weekend and a couple of other items to go over.
Swimmer of the Month
Olympic Way 1 - The Olympic Way 1 swimmer of the month for March is Rowan Domes. Rowan comes to each practice with a smile on her face ready to get to work. She has been paying extra attention to technical details and makes good stroke corrections. She has also been doing a great job leading the lane and learning to read the pace clock. Rowan had an excellent meet at the Pronghorn classic where she completed her first ever 200 IM in an impressive time of 3:39.17. She not only made huge improvements in her racing times, but she also focused on the technical details of each race. Keep up the great work Rowan!

Olympic Way 2 - The Olympic way 2 swimmer of the month is McKenzie McFadzean. McKenzie has done a great job this month at showing up to practice ready to work hard. She does a great job at responding to her coaches feedback and has made many improvements in her swimming. Congratulations McKenzie!

Provincial - The Provincial swimmer of the month is Amelie Freisen. Her hard work and constant focus on little things that we talk about. We love her smile and positive outlook.

Jr. National - There was a big competition for Swimmer of the month in the Jr. National group, with a lot of top end meets in the month, it was quite the competition to secure the award. This swimmer most often arrives early and is always eager to write the set onto the board to see what we are doing and is not one to back away from a challenge. They have shown an exceptional ability to push themselves in practice while balancing a big schedule that involves other sports. Their effort always seems to climb to new heights when the pressure is on and they demonstrated this ability at Provincials Championships this past month as they claimed the Provincial title and gold in the 50 Free. Their time has them sat as 6th in the country with their time of 27.94. Congratulations to the Jr. National swimmer of the month, Kate Machacek.

National - This group was arguably even harder to decide as there were countless performances and worthy individuals to choose from. However, out of all of the performances, there was one that stood out as very exceptional. This swimmer has had to deal with some setbacks through the year and has had to work around modified and challenging training environments. Through these encounters and difficulties, this swimmer has shown the resilience to keep coming back and keep trying. They were rewarded for their efforts at Provincial Championships as they took home two medals, a gold and a silver. In the 100 Breaststroke they fought to a new best time and finished within half a second of the gold medal winning time, however their best was yet to come. In the 50 Breast, this swimmer lead from start to finish and took home not only the Provincial Title, but also walked away with their first ever Canadian Trials cut and the #2 time in the country. The National Swimmer of the Month is Riley Ginther.

Academy - After a flurry of meets in the month of March one swimmer saw themselves rise to the occasion again and again. Over the course of Pronghorn Classic and Provincial Champs, this swimmer knocked over 7 personal best times and found themselves in second swims at Provincial Finals. They have been working hard all season long and were able to reap the rewards of that work over their last couple of meets, and we’re sure that trend is just starting. Academy swimmer of the Month is Aki Oshima

Jr. Horns
Today was the first day of our last session for the Jr. Horns program and we were excited to see the swimmers back in the pool. We still have open spaces if you or any friends you have are interested in getting your swimmers into the pool for our Spring Session. It runs until June 26th with a break from April 18th - 27th. You can find the registration page here.
We have a number of meets this weekend as LASC swimmers find themselves competing in three different cities. You can find all of the meets and further information, including entries and timeouts, on our Event page. As well, there is a link to a PDF with all of the meets we have during the season here.
Bridge City Spring Classic - Saskatoon (April 10-13th)
Thank you to all those who registered for the Bridge City Spring Classic in Saskatoon. We have our chaperone ready to make the drive and we can’t wait to descend upon the pool to show the swimmers in Saskatchewan what Lethbridge is all about. We will see the team travel group bright and early on Thursday morning and we will meet up with everyone else at the Shaw Centre in Saskatoon.
Dino Cup - Calgary (April 12-13th)
Thank you to all those you registered for the Dino Cup upcoming in Calgary. The Meet is for 10&U Girls and 11&U Boys. The two day competition will surely be a great way to finish the session before the mid season break. We will see you at the UofC Pool on Saturday.
Canadian Open - Edmonton (April 10-13th)
One of Swim Canada’s premier long course racing competitions, we have a small crew of swimmers qualified and headed up for the upcoming Canadian Open in Edmonton. Some of the best swimmers in the country, like Olympians Taylor Ruck, Ingrid Wilm, Finlay Knox, and Blake Tierney, will be present alongside our LASC swimmers as they get valuable race and meet experience.
Mid-Season Break
All groups and swimmers in the club will be off from April 18th - April 27th. There will be no dryland or practices. This is our mid-season break to give everyone a little pause and rest before we finish off our season.
Take care and swim fast!
