Year-End BBQ & Awards - June 18th
Our Year-End BBQ and Awards is this week on the evening of Wednesday, June 18th at 6 pm. The event will take place at Elk’s Compound (Picnic Shelter) in the Coulees.
Swim Alberta Festival Meet
We had an exciting weekend of racing here at the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre with the top 12 & Under swimmers in the Province, and a few from BC, coming into town for the Festival Meet. Festival serves as the 12 & Under championship meet in Alberta, with swimmers racing in age groups of 9 & Under, 10, 11, and 12. This year’s Festival meet was a different set-up with last year’s edition being split into North and South versions, while this year combined the whole province into one meet with very significant qualifying times. We applaud all the swimmers on their achievement of making the meet.
We had 10 swimmers represent LASC at the meet with many great swims across the board. Victoria battled some sickness but still came out to give her best on the 50 Free. Asher had an excellent swim meet making 5 Best times and finding himself on the podium for three bronze medals (50 Fr, 100 Fr, 100 IM). Michael joined us for relays on Saturday and Sunday, stepping up with our boys to compete in a few races. Kylie saw new best times in 2 of her events and saw a top placing of 22nd in the 50 Back. Anelise swam to a best time in each of the events she entered and was able to find herself in two finals on the weekend (50 Free and 50 Back) along with 3 more top 10 finishes. Nyah Nickel swam to 4 best times along with a top placement of 13th in the 50 Breast and being very close to making a second swim. Evelyn O’Brien had a great meet, hitting a best time in 7 races, making 5 separate Finals (50 & 100 Free, 50 Back, 50 Fly, 100 IM) with a top place finish of 5th in the 100 Free. Rhys swam to 4 best times across the three day meet, he saw a top placement of 13th in both the 50 and 100 Breast. Linden stopped the clock with a best time in every race he competed in along with a top placement of 22nd in the 400 Free. Our last swimmer, Priya, swam to a best time in each of her 8 events and powered herself to a 9th place finish in the 400 Free and was just over a tenth from qualifying for the 50 Free Final. In one of the speical events, we had Asher and Anelise join swimmers from other clubs in North vs. South relays. Following the 50 Free individual event, the meet organizers took the Top 4 times from each region and put those swimmers together on a team to race North vs. South at Sunday Finals. Asher teamed up with three other swimmers to help power the South to victory in the 10 year old Boys relay. Anelise joined in on the 12 year old Girls relay and delivered the fastest split of anyone on her team, however, the South team was just outdone by an excellent performance from the North. Asher was also recognized by Swim Alberta for swimming under a T5 Youth Recognition Time. Youth Recognition Times for 10 & Unders are based on a 5 year running average of the 5th place time in the Province. A big congratulations to all the swimmers that capped off the year with a terrific weekend of racing.
A very big thank you to all of the volunteers and support we had all weekend from our club membership. Whether it was parents or swimmers, it was amazing to see the amount of time, dedication, and work you all put in to make this meet possible and a great success. The energy on deck and in the stands was electric, especially during finals, and you all played an integral role in giving these swimmers these awesome experiences and memories. We truly thank you for all the time you put into making this meet a reality for the swimmers.
Canadian World Championship Trials
When I last put out this newsletter we were in the midst of Canadian World Trials and we have a few more swims to recap from that event. Daniel Alexander lopped off a second in his 200 Back to move up into the Top 10 18 year olds in Canada for that event. Taylor Ginther and Calyn Lothian closed off their meets with a 50 fly each, both being a bit over their lifetime bests. Kate HIll and Jake Odorski were able to cap their meets off by making Jr. Finals in their 50 Fly swims. Kate had a huge best time in the morning to move her into the Womens Jr Final where she finished in 7th. Jake took around half a second off his 50 Fly PB to find himself in the Jr Final, where again he was able to shed a few more tenths for an 8th place finish. Jake’s time also came in under the Senior Trials cut time, a first for him. Overall the 6 LASC swimmers came back with 9 new personal bests, 3 Junior Finals, 2 B Finals, as well as a lot of lessons learned and experience gained about racing at the National level.
