Cascade Speed Meet Recap
Cascade Speed Meet Recap
LASC sent a small crew of 14 swimmers to Calgary to attend the annual Cascade Speed Meet last weekend. Despite being a small group, they made quite an impactful presence. Every swimmer in attendance swam to best times and qualified for multiple finals across the two day event.
One club record fell on the weekend as Calyn rebroke her 200 Free record from the Fall Challenge with a dominant win. That was just one of Calyn’s many impressive swims on the weekend as she swept the Freestyle titles from the 50 to the 400 and now sits at #2 in club rankings in the 50, 100, and 400.
Taylor joined Calyn on the podium in a number of swims as the pair went 1-2 in both the 50 and 100 Free. Taylor also added wins and personal bests in the 50 and 100 Fly along with medals in both the 50 and 100 Back to follow. Kate showed off her sprint freestyle prowess during the meet as she doubled up in Gold medals in the 50 and 100 Free, the latter marking a new best time and sees her as the first 13 year old to go under 59 seconds in the country so far this season.
Aaron, Riley, and Taya showed themselves as top contenders across the breaststroke events all weekend long. Aaron picked up a silver in the 100 Breast and added a Gold in the 50 later in the meet to go along with a big time drop in his 200 Breast, making the final in that as well. Riley and Taya teamed up to go 1-2 in the 50 Breast and 2-3 in the 100 Breast as both swimmers saw new best times set in each event. Riley added a PB in the 200 Breast and Taya saw a new high mark in her 100 Free to close out a great weekend for the pair. Alex joined Riley and Taya in some breaststroke success as she found a new PB and Silver in the 200m rendition and added another silver in the 200 IM. In a fantastic display of grit and determination Alex swam two finals, 100 Back and 400 IM, within a 10 minute span of one another. She earned a lifetime PB and top 5 place finish in the 400 IM for her hard work.
The backstroke crew of Bentley, Kayden, and Anderson had a fantastic meet, each of them swam all three distances of Backstroke, seeing a combined 7 new best times across the 9 events. Bentley almost swept the backstrokes as he took wins in the 100 and 200 before just being out touched for Gold in the 50. The three swims all represented massive time drops as he set new standards across a number of events. Kayden saw drops in his 100 and 200 Back and paired them with time drops in his 50 and 100 Free and 50 Fly. The 100 Free and 50 Fly saw some barriers broken as it marked his first time under the 60 seconds in the Free and the first sub 30 during his 50 Fly. Anderson saw new marks in his 50 and 100 Back, the former coming dangerously close to the 28 mark and his 100 sounding off for a huge drop as he took over a second off his former best. He also saw a good half second drop in his 50 fly to close out the weekend. JJ and Kya joined the backstroke crew to see success as JJ saw a new mark in his 100 Back and Kya started the meet off with a big swim as she swam her fastest 200 Back and moved up several spots to qualify for the finals. JJ’s other top highlights on the weekend were around his 50 and 100 Fly where he saw a 5th place finish and new PB markers in both distances.
Anelise and Victoria were our two representatives from the Jr. National group, and they showed up ready to race. Anelise saw a big time drop in her 200 Back as she battled through a great race, knocking 3 seconds off her best time. She added a B-Final victory and PB in her 100 Free and just snuck under her 200 Free best time to cap off a good weekend. Victoria found success in her sprint freestyle events, seeing new marks in the 50 and 100, knocking half a second off in the shorter event and exactly one second off in the 100. Her success in the two events saw her qualify in the A-Final for both races, showing her ability to compete with the best in the province.
Across the weekend, LASC swimmers found themselves setting 51 new top times across 72 events for a very successful in-season competition. Most of these swimmers are now back to a hefty training block as they get set for a highly anticipated December when we get prepped for our Peak meets for the short course season.
LASC’s next competition is set to dive in this weekend at the Big Marble Go Centre in Medicine Hat. Swimmers from the Olympic Way, Provincial, Jr. National, and National groups are gearing up for some quick racing with teams from across Southern Alberta and South Saskatchewan for what should be a promising battle on the prairies.
