Thank you for your interest in Aulea! Please read below about tryouts, registration and Aulea Swim Club. Aulea is a year-round competitive swim club. Unfortunately we do not have a Learn to Swim program or Swim Lessons at this time.

OUR NEXT TRYOUT WILL BE MARCH 2026

If you are new to the island and looking to transfer from another USA Swimming club and LSC, please email Coach Joe ([email protected]) and Coach Kimi ([email protected])

Swimmers ages 6-11 may attend our twice yearly tryout. The purpose of the tryout is to assess minimum requirements and to place each swimmer in one of our competitive swim groups or to our pre team group. Attending a tryout DOES NOT guarantee a spot on the team.

Swimmers ages 12-18 interested in joining the team may contact Coach Kimi ([email protected]) to schedule a tryout.

Minimum requirements to be considered for Intro Group (pre-team age 6-9): 25 yards continuous, unassisted freestyle with side breathing, 25 yards continuous, unassisted backstroke, demonstrate breaststroke and butterfly. Unfortunately Aulea Swim Club does not have a Learn to Swim program or Swim Lessons. The Intro program is Intro to COMPETITIVE SWIMMING.

Minimum requirements to be considered for the age + ability tiered Kailua District Park Groups: Ages 8-11 50 yards (continuous) of each stroke (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly).

Minimum standard for swimmers ages 12 and older: 12 x 50 freestyle on :50 interval and 3 x 100 IM on 2:00 interval.

Linked below for reference are videos demonstrating 25 yards of proper, legal technique of all 4 competitive strokes:

Step 1 - Tryout: Please complete and submit this TRYOUT FORM prior to your child's tryout. One form for each swimmer please.  Your child should arrive to the pool wearing their suit and have goggles (swim cap optional) and a towel. Coaches will conduct swim evaluations in small groups of children of similar age. After the tryout (typically within 48 hours), you will be notified of the outcome via email.

Step 2 - Trial Period: If the coaching staff agrees that your child meets Aulea's minimum requirements and there is availability in the appropriate group he/she will be invited to attend practices for a trial period (1-2 weeks). The trial period is both for the swimmer and family to decide if they want to be part of the team, and for the coaches to continue to assess the swimmer's ability and place them in the correct group. By the end of (or at any point during) the trial period, the swimmer and family can decide to decline the spot on the team or complete the online registration process so the child can continue to attend practices.

Step 3 - Registration: Your online registration needs to be completed immediately following (or during) your trial period. Parents will initiate the registration process on the Aulea TeamUnify site>JOIN US>TEAM REGISTRATION (LINK) and a representative from Aulea will approve and finalize registration. You’ll need to provide account and member information, email a birth certificate and pay the initial fee by credit card. Once you are registered with Aulea and you have access to your account, you can switch your payment method to automatic checking account withdrawal (ACH).

FAQs

How much does the team cost?

Monthly dues are between $80 (Intro levels) and $160 (National level) depending on the swim group. In addition, there is an $90 annual registration fee for the USA Swimming organization and $100 Aulea registration fee. There are also entry fees for swim meets (typically $2-3 per event and most kids swim 2-4 events per session/meet). Aulea requires all parents to pay by automated checking account withdrawal or credit card. All charges are subject to a 2.5% processing fee.

When are practices?

The team is currently practicing at multiple pools on the island (Kailua District Park, Kokokahi YWCA and Le Jardin Academy). Practice frequency and duration vary by age/level. Intro groups practice 2-3 times/week for 45 minutes while the National group practices 7+ times/week for an average of 2 hours. See the Groups tab for more details.

How are parents expected to get involved:

Meets, special events/activities, and fundraising are not possible without parent volunteers. Aulea expects parents to volunteer in some way for at least 25 hours per year.

How often are meets?

Aulea strives to offer all swimmers the opportunity to compete at minimally 5 meets/year. Intro/Bronze swimmers can participate in our intersquad meet (held at Kailua District Pool), Block Party Meets, mini meets (held at Kokokahi), ABC meets (various locations on-island), and other novice meets (TBD). Most Silver group swimmers and up qualify for A+ meets and invitationals (INVT) and many achieve CHAMPS qualifying times to attend Age Group State Champs. Our National level swimmers compete in invitationals, Senior State Champs, and strive to attend Regional and National meets on the mainland.

What if my child does not want to swim at meets?

Aulea is a competitive swim club and swimmers are strongly encouraged to compete. Parents, swimmer, and coach should work together to determine if/when a child is ready to attend a meet and discuss which meet would be best for the first time competitor.

Do swimmers have to wear a uniform?

Each swimmer will receive an Aulea team t-shirt and swimsuit. All swimmers must purchase and wear an Aulea swim cap at meets; swimmers with longer hair should wear caps for practice as well. Swimmers need to wear goggles and swim suits appropriate for competitive swimming (one piece for girls and jammers or brief for boys).

Is there play time during practice?

During practice, kids do interact with each other and further their friendships, but they are focused on conditioning and stroke technique. Once a year, Aulea hosts a week-long “Aulea Olympics” that is completely focused on camaraderie, team spirit and fun. The 12 & under groups typically have an element of "fun" in at least one practice a week - this could be a relay at the end of the practice, biggest/smallest splash contest, water polo, or another pool game.
