At Sage Piranhas, we recognize that swimmers may occasionally seek additional instruction outside of regular team practices. Our goal is to support each athlete’s development while preserving the unity, consistency, and integrity of our coaching philosophy.
Private Coaching Policy
Permitted with Conditions
Swimmers may pursue private lessons outside the team under the following guidelines:
  • Purpose: Lessons should focus on technical skills such as stroke refinement, starts, or turns—areas that may not be fully addressed during team practices.
  • Non-Competitive Relationship: The private coach must not be affiliated with a competing team or involved in recruiting Sage Piranhas swimmers.
  • Transparency: Families must inform the head coach of any outside instruction.
  • Team Limitations: If Sage Piranhas is unable to offer private lessons or meet specific individual needs, outside instruction is more acceptable.
Expectations
  • Maintain open communication with the coaching staff.
  • Ensure alignment in coaching philosophy to avoid conflicting techniques.
  • Schedule private lessons outside of Sage Piranhas practice times.
Discouraged Practices
While not explicitly prohibited, we discourage outside coaching in the following situations:
  • When it disrupts coaching consistency or introduces conflicting techniques.
  • If it creates loyalty or commitment concerns within the team.
  • When it undermines team unity or the authority of Sage Piranhas coaches.
Possible Consequences
  • Reduced group placement opportunities.
  • Limited meet entries.
  • Increased scrutiny of swimmer development and behavior.
Prohibited Practices
To protect the integrity of our program, the following are strictly prohibited:
  • Private lessons with coaches from rival teams or programs that actively recruit swimmers.
  • Scheduling private lessons during Sage Piranhas practice times.
  • Repeated outside coaching without disclosure to the head coach.
Violations may result in:
  • Warnings or formal discussions.
  • Restrictions on participation in team events.
  • In extreme cases, dismissal from the team.
Guidance for Parents and Swimmers
To ensure a positive and productive experience:
  • Consult this policy before arranging outside lessons.
  • Be transparent with the coaching staff about your swimmer’s needs.
  • Share goals and progress from private lessons with the head coach.
  • Choose private coaches who are neutral, respected, and aligned with Sage Piranhas values.
