Time Standards Changed
Minnesota has traditionally adjusted its time standards every quadrennial (after the Olympics). Using the best practice method of reviewing historical data, the Technical Planning Committee set a goal to target the size of the state meets and set corresponding “CH” standards accordingly. Each event for ages 13 and over were calculated by averaging the results from the previous three years, determining the top 50 times, and setting new standards based on those times and the anticipated number of swimmers in championship heats.

Progression of Time Standards
Time Standards- Each gender, and age group is further divided into groups based on times.
These times groups are Pre-C/C,B,A, "CH", and Zone. "B" times are faster than "Pre-C/C" times and "A" times are faster than "B" times.

Pre-C/C
|
“No Time”, “C” qualifying time or slower “Pre-C” time. These are usually novice swimmers and first meet experiences. C/Pre-C Meets are also a good opportunity for more experienced athletes to attempt longer events for the first time, such as the 200 Fly, 500 Free, or 400 IM.

B
|
Times faster than "C" times.

A

Aging Up
A swimmer must swim in one age group category for the entire meet (i.e. if a swimmer decides to swim up in one event, s/he must swim up in all events). If a swimmer swims up at the B level, s/he may not go back to the C level. Such a swimmer would not be eligible for awards. This applies to swimmers when their birthday falls between the M/M meet and State Meet.
