Division I HS State Championship Results

Our OSSC swimmers continued their torrid swimming in the DI finals session on Saturday evening.  We had a very large DI contingent, as 25 of our 36 swimmers competed at the DI championships in Canton over the weekend.

In the 200 medley relay, OSSC swimmers helped their HS teams to strong results. Freshman Brenna Cooper, sophomore Lauren Cooper, and freshman Emma Mathews helped their Dublin Jerome team place 13th. For the men, senior Austin Beam swam the backstroke leadoff for St. Charles’ state runner-up relay. Seniors Colin Reardon and Ian Hamilton helped Upper Arlington finish 4th.  In the consol heat, senior Jack Saczawa paced his Liberty relay with the fastest backstroke split of the heat (23.68).

In the 200 free, senior Ellie Nebraska swam to a new best time (1:51.10), finishing 6th for Olentangy. For the men, freshman Pearson Spychalski finished 15th (Pearson and Spencer Tussing were the only two male freshman to qualify for this event).

We had several OSSC swimmers competing in the 200 IM. Sophomore Rachel Peroni had a strong swim for Liberty to finish 5th in 2:06.54. On the men’s side, Austin (5th) and Colin (9th) swam very well, and were joined by sophomore Jason Mathews, who placed 14th for Pickerington North.

Hans Kabelka, a junior from St. Charles, and Ian had a great battle in the 50 free, with Hans finishing 9th (21.21) and Ian touching 11th (21.27).

Rachel continued her strong swimming in the 100 fly, touching the wall 11th with a 56.32. On the men’s side, sophomore Ben Kuriger from Olentangy swam to a new best time and 10th-place finish in 50.50.

In the 100 free, Ellie finished 10th with a 51.85. For the men, Hans competed in his first individual finals heat to place 7th. In the consol heat, senior Winston Kuriger from Olentangy had a phenomenal time drop to win the heat in 45.82.

The OSSC had the only freshman swimmer at finals in the men’s 500 free, as Spencer from Grove City finished 15th overall in a new best time of 4:39.59.

In the 200 free relay, Ally Braun and Rachel helped Liberty to an 8th-place finish. In consols, Miaya Green swam on Canal Winchester’s 13th-place relay, and Ellie, Bridget Parker, and Abbey Newman helped Olentangy finish 15th.

In the men’s 200 free relay, Hans helped St. Charles to a 3rd-place finish, Ian paced Upper Arlington to a 5th-place finish, and senior Ben Routh swam a great leg to help Grove City finish 6th. In the consol heat, senior Keith Serafy and junior Joel Serafy were half of Hilliard Davidson’s 12th-place relay, while Pearson assisted New Albany in its 13th-place finish.

We had four seniors in the 100 back, with Austin and Jack finishing 5th and 6th, respectively, in finals. In consols, Winston placed 10th and Colin touched 14th.

Our sole representative in the 100 breast made the most of his opportunity. Jason swam to a runner-up finish in 55.31, which ranks as the 6th-fastest time in the history of the meet!

In the final event of the meet, many of our same swimmers helped their relays to strong finishes. Ellie, Bridget, and Abbey helped Olentangy finish 12th, while Ally and Rachel helped Liberty finish 13th. Colin and Ian paced Upper Arlington to a 3rd-place finish, while Spencer swam a strong leg on Grove City’s 8th-place team. In consols, Jack anchored Liberty to an 11th-place finish.

It was an amazing weekend for the OSSC! We congratulate our swimmers and all of their HS teams on their successes! You can read more about the HS State Championships here.
