11-14 Oregon Championships & Oregon Senior Region Championships update from John: 

NEWPORT SWIM TEAM AT 11-14 STATE SWIMMING CHAMPS                              3/1/24

Between Feb. 22-25, 6 members of Newport Swim Team competed at the Oregon Swimming Arena SC 11-14 State Championships held in Corvallis. 38 Oregon teams qualified over 500 swimmers to take part. NST finished 36th in the combined team scoring, with 11 yr old Jay Eibner accounting for all the team points. The NST kids swam 25 total races over the weekend and posted 17 personal best times. Out of those 25 total races, NST swimmers placed in the Top 20 in 15 of those. Individually,

            Skyla Chen, 12, had her best finish of 14th in the 50 Backstroke, she also posted 4 PR’s out of 6 swims

            Hudson Cline, 12, finished 31st in the 50 Free

            Jay Eibner, 11, placed 7th in the 50 Breaststroke and had 3 PR’s out of 3 races

            Hana Parker, 14, (a member of the NHS Girls State champ team) best showing was a 12th in the 100 Butterfly.

            Ruby Perucci, 14, (also a NHS Champ) placed 11th in the 100 Backstroke

            Gwynn Postlewait, 14, (also an NHS Swim Champ) was 5 out of 6 in posting PR’s and a best showing of 11th in the 200 Breaststroke.

 

NEWPORT SWIM TEAM IN ACTION – OREGON SENIOR SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS           3/3/24

Two weeks after leading the NHS Cubs to a sweep the state 4A high school state swimming champs, 7 NST members headed to Beaverton to take part in the 2024 Oregon Arena Senior Region 12 Championships Feb. 29 thru March 3rd. 40 swim clubs from Oregon, Alaska and Idaho sent nearly 500 swimmers to compete. In the team scoring, NST placed 16th place with 122 points (Lake Oswego SC won the meet with 3062 points). 

Sam Postlewait – Made finals in all 5 of his individual events, broke the NST team record for 200 Free, and had 4 top 10 finishes, best placing a 5th in the 100 Free, and a 7th in the 200 Back.

Layla Bretz – Out of her 5 events, she made 3 finals, with her best placings a 17th in the 200 Butterfly and 21st in the 100 Fly

Claire Hurty – Swam in 6 events with her best placing a 44th in the 500 Free

Ben Hurty – Out of his 6 races, he made 5 finals, placing 6th in the 100 Back and 10th in the 200 Back. He also recorded 5 personal best times.

Jack Sappington - Out of his 5 individual events, Jack made finals in both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, broke the NST team record in the 200 Breast and recorded 4 PR’s.

Ivan Farias – Placed 46th in the 200 Breaststroke and 66th in the 100 Breaststroke

Pia Lihou – Placed 67th in the 200 Back

NST also fielded 2 relays during the meet. The boys 200 Medley Relay placed 19th. The team composed of Ben Hurty, Ivan Farias, Jack Sappington and Sam Postlewait. In addition, NST raced in the Mixed 200 Medley Relay, taking 17th. That team was composed of Claire Hurty, Ivan Farias, Layla Bretz and Jack Sappington.
