Newport Swim Team Athlete Code of Ethics
The purpose of this code of conduct is to promote individual and team excellence both in and out of the water. This code of conduct encompasses the expectations of all NST athletes no matter their age. Our goals are to:
- Provide a positive environment to encourage, educate, and engage our athlete members.
- Provide a challenging environment to promote mental, physical, and emotional growth.
- Provide a respectful environment to foster sportsmanship, self-control, and humility.
All swimmers are expected to behave in an exemplary manner and will display proper respect and sportsmanship towards fellow team members, fellow competitors, coaches, officials, parents, facility staff, and the public always. As representatives of the Newport Swim Team (NST), Oregon Swimming, and USA Swimming, members of NST should always act with respect and with positive support towards coaches, swimmers, officials, facility staff and the greater swimming community. Behavior that reflects poorly on the NST will not be tolerated.
Team members will not engage in any inappropriate physical contact. A swimmer will not interact with another swimmer in a manner that they would not be willing to use with any teammate of either gender.
Team members will conduct themselves appropriately, respect the facilities, and follow all rules at the Newport Aquatic Center and the Newport Recreation Center.
Newport Aquatic Center Code of Conduct
- Locker room usage will be kept at a minimum. Participants may use the locker room for changing and showers. Participants are asked to keep their time in space briefly. Do not leave personal belongings in the locker room, they can be stored on deck, during practice times in NST designated areas.
- Swimmers are not allowed in the Hot Tub during practice. Swimmers are not allowed in the activity pool during practice unless approved by coach or Aquatic Supervisor.
- Swimmers who arrive early to practice or if a swimmer is picked up late may wait quietly in the Rec Center lobby or in the spectator area of the Aquatic Center.
- Swimmers may not be on deck without a lifeguard and NST coach or representative present.
Team members will respect the host personnel at our host swim meet facilities and abide by all rules concerning the use of those facilities.
Team members will not use obscene, profane, or abusive language in the presence of any swimmer, parent, or coach during or traveling to/from practices, meets, or team activities.
Team members are prohibited from possession and use of illegal substances and/or use of tobacco and alcohol. Likewise, swimmers will not abuse prescription or non-prescription drugs.
Team members will refrain from all illegal or inappropriate behaviors that would detract from a positive image of the team or be detrimental to its performance objectives, which would include but is not limited to “deck changing” and possession of pornography.
At swim meets, team members will adhere to USA Swimming travel standards of conduct.
All team members will follow the directions of the coaching staff and/or chaperones when under team supervision.
All team members will follow the USA Swimming and Oregon Swimming recruitment policies.
Bullying is prohibited. The severe or repeated use by one or more NST members of an oral, written, electronic or other technological expression, image, sound, data or intelligence of any nature (regardless of the method of transmission), or a physical act or gesture, or any combination thereof, directed at any other member that has the effect of:
- Causing physical or emotional harm to the other member or damage to the other member’s property.
- Placing the other member in reasonable fear of harm to themselves or of damage to their property.
- Creating a hostile environment for the other members at any NST/USA swimming activity.
- Infringing on the rights of the other members at any NST/USA Swimming activity.
- Materially and substantially disrupting the training process or the orderly operation of any NST/USA Swimming activity.
- Falsely accusing anyone of the above actions.
The coaching staff and the NST Board have the final word on any rule. Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in, but not necessarily be limited to, any of the following actions:
- Verbal warning/talking to by coach.
- Removal from practice-refocus time. Parents notified.
- Removal from practice for extended length of time. Coach/Parent/Swimmer conference.
- Swimmer suspended or completely removed from the NST program.
As a team member of Newport Swim Team, I agree to abide by the standards of conduct outlined below during the time I am participating with NST during the current competition year and until I resign from the team.
For a broken Code of Ethic or concern please report to the Head Coach. If no resolution is resolved, please report to the Board of Directors.
