Coach Gavin

This will be Coach Gavin’s last season with NST.  He has been coaching for 11 years.  Gavin has been balancing his coaching duties while working full-time at the Newport Middle School and attending community college.  In the fall he will move up to university courses and will be advance in his teaching role therefore needing more time to focus on the schooling and his teaching career.  Gavin has given NST more than he knows.  Just hi presence brings the kid’s joy! We will honor and celebrate Gavin at our NST Awards & Potluck event on September 15 at Moonshine Park. 

 

Today is the last day to sign up for NST Swim Conferences for free Arena benefit-orders need to be in by the end of the day today as well. (You can sign up for a conference after July 1-just no Arena benefit)

This is for parents/guardians and swimmer to meet up with their coaches to get a swimmer review and have any questions/concerns answered.  Coach Shayna will meet with all group levels along with the according coach (Gavin or Kathy). If you have multiple swimmers, you can combine the meetings or keep them separate, but please note who the swimmer or swimmers will be.  If you are not able to meet in the time frame listed, please let me know and we will find a time that works for your family.  Schedule your conference at the Team Events page: Management Console - Newport Swim Team - TeamUnify (gomotionapp.com)

For those that sign up by July 1 the swimmer gets free arena gear!!!

Training suits are not listed on the option sheet, but they are an option.  Click here to view the full catalog to see training suits. Tech suits or two-piece suits are not options.  If you have any questions regarding the options let me know.  We hope to provide everyone that makes the deadline with at least one item. This is available to active swimmers only.

Team Eugene Invite Summary by John

Newport Swim Team                         7/1/24

With the coming of July, Newport Swim Team attended their last meet before long course State Championships begin. Seven NST members took part in the TEAM Eugene Invitational June 28-30 at the 50-meter outdoor Amazon pool in Eugene. A total of 12 swim teams from Oregon and Idaho took part. Team Eugene ran away with the combined team score, while NST took 8th place. For the 11 and older athletes, this Eugene meet was a prelims (in the AM) with finals (in the PM) format, which tested the athletes training and racing abilities. Individually:

 

Layla Bretz, 18 swam her last swim meet with NST, competing in 6 events with a 2nd place and three 4th place finishes in the 15 & over girls division. Layla finishes her NST career owning 15 individual team records from 9-10 to Senior level division in Free, Back and Butterfly. In addition, she is a member of 21 different relay team records from the same age groups mentioned above. Finally, she is part of 2 NHS school record relay teams and a member of 2 Oregon state High School 4A Swimming Championships.

Pia Lihou, 18 – Also a member of those 2 NHS State Championships, competed in 6 events, recording 2 PRs in the 15 & Over girls division. Her best placings included 5th in the 400 IM, and two 6th places in the 100 back and 200 IM. Pia owns an NST team record in the 9-10 girls 200 Butterfly and is part of 12 relay team records from 9-10 to Senior age groups.

Mariam Kimberly, 14 competed in her first long course meet in Eugene, She swam 6 races and recorded 6 personal best times. She took 6th in the 50 butterfly and 9th in the 50 Backstroke in the 13-14 girls division.

Helen Faber, 8 had an outstanding first long course meet, competing in 4 races with 4 personal best times to go along with a qualifying time in the 50 free for the Oregon 10 & Under LC State Champs in July. She also recorded a B time in the 50 Back.In the 8 & Under girl’s division, Helen took 2nd in the 100 free and posted two 3rd place finishes in the 50 free and 50 Back.

Ivan Farias, 17 a member of the NHS boys 4A swim champs, took part in 7 races and posted 4 PR’s. Ivan recorded a 4th in the 200 Breaststroke and a 6th in the 50 Breast.

Ben Hurty, 17, also a member of the NHS 4A state swim championship team (and an individual high school state champ) had a very busy weekend as he prepares for several club championship meets in July. Ben took part in 7 events and made finals in all 7, while recording 4 PR’s. He took 2nd in the 50 Back, 3rd in the 100 Free and 4th in the 200 IM.

Zoey Chappell, 11 had a meet to remember!! Having just aged up from 10 to 11, her first Prelim/ Finals meet was a long course meet held outdoors competing against 12-year-old. Zoey handled it like a pro! 9 prelim swims into 9 Final swims!!

Taking a 2nd in the 200 Back, a 5th in the 200 Free and 100 Back, but also being the highest placed 11 yr. old in many of her races. 18 total swims, 9 PR’s. She recorded an A qualifying times for state champs in the 100 Free, 200 IM and 200 Free. To put a cheery on top, she set a new NST team record in the 11-12 girls division in the 200 Backstroke!!

Kids did great!
