We conclude our 2023-2024 season with the 49th Annual Seahorse Swim Meet. What a meet! Thank you to all who helped!

49th Seahorse Meet Update by John

NEWPORT SWIM TEAM             8/12/24

The Seahorse Invitational swim meet has been taking place in Newport for over 45 years. Last weekend (8/9-11), the Newport Swim Team played host to 17 swim teams from through-out Oregon, with over 300 swimmers taking part in the 2 ½ day meet held at the Newport Recreation and Aquatic Center. No team scores were kept for the meet.

30 NST members competed in the meet and ended their 2023-24 season on a high note. Establishing 95 personal best swims, along with 103 top 10 finishes. There were also a number of first-time races at the meet for NST. Racing for the first time included:

Fallou Morse-Thioub (10), Reign Berry (7), Addy Boyce (13), and Collin Conrad (8).

NST collected 26 first-place ribbons as follows:

Gwynn Postlewait (14) and Kenlie Ware (8) with 7 wins apiece, followed by Sam Postlewait with 4 wins, Zoey Chappell (11) and Jay Eibner (11) with 2 each and Ben Hurty (17), Skyla Chen (12), Hana Parker (14) and Olive Mitchell (8) with one victory each.

A handful of NST swimmers had outstanding meets, recording numerous PR’s:

Patti Parker (11), and Collin Iseri (12) each recorded 7 PRs for the meet, while Kindal Brandenberger (12) and Emma Zamudio (11) recording 6 PR’s and Aine Mahar (13) recorded 5 PRs.

The team also recorded a number of Oregon Swimming qualifying times for next seasons state champs

         A times: Kenlie Ware, Helen Faber (8), Olive Mitchell and Jay Eibner

         B times: Jay Eibner, Kenlie Ware, Zoey Chappell, Iker Leo (11) and Jahan Eibner

To top it all off: Ben Hurty, Claire Hurty, Sam Postlewait and Pia Lihou recorded a new team record in the mixed 400 Free Relay

The entire list of NST swimmers taking part in the meet are as follows: Christian Beck, Reign Berry, Addy Boyce, Kindal Brandenberger, Zoey Chappell, Skyla Chen, Ashlyn and Collin Conrad, Jahan & Jay Eibner, Helen Faber, Dylan Gibson, Gigi Howard, Ben & Claire Hurty, Collin Iseri, Mariam Kimberly, Iker Leo, Sophia Lihou, Aine Mahar, Olive Mitchell, Fallou Morse-Thioub, Hana Parker, Patti Parker, Gwynn & Sam Postlewait, Allison, Kenlie & Grayson Ware and Emma Zamudio

This Seahorse meet was also the last meet for Assistant Coach Gavin Santiago who leaves the NST after 11 years of outstanding service and commitment to the kids. He will be missed.

In addition, Sam Postlewait leaves NST with his name etched in the club team records with 9 individual team records and part of 7 relay team records, to go along with one NHS team record, 5 individual state high school championships and a member of the 2024 NHS State 4A champs. Sam will swim for Linfield Univ in the Fall.

Newport Swim Team finishes its 2023-24 season with having set 28 new individual and relay records, having sent qualifiers to all the Oregon Swimming Championships (short-course and long-course) and Sectional Championships this season.
