2019 Marin Morrison Recap

IST Communications

IST sent 40 members of our Surge Squads to participate in the 10thAnnual Marin Morrison Memorial meet April 27th-28that Hazen High School. The meet honors 2008 Paralympian Marin Morrison, who passed away in 2009, and is held every year in order to preserve the memory of her determination, courage, and example of always reaching for your goal. It welcomes novice and first-time swimmers and provides an excellent atmosphere of sportsmanship and support for our younger athletes. Over the course of the weekend, athletes participated in 13 first-time swims and achieved 88 best times.

The coaching staff outlined a couple of goals for the weekend. First, encouraging our swimmers to get back into good racing habits by focusing on starts and turns. Second, enjoying the experiences of first-time swims such as 50s, 100s, or even 200s. While there were a couple of hiccups involved in the return to racing after our post-championship season training break, it was great to see all our swimmers relish their chances to swim fast and have fun!

Additionally, we set a strong expectation that swimmers participate in our meet theme of “Stand Up for Each Other.” This involved a great display of Sockeye Spirit during the 25- and 50-yard events by having all IST team members stand up and cheer during those sprints. Not only did this keep the athletes moving, but it also encouraged them to learn the names of other swimmers outside their normal training groups and kept them engaged in the meet.

Members of the Surge Squads with at least one PNS Silver Time will return to action at next week’s IST Spring Open at the King County Aquatic Center.

Congratulations to all of our participants on a job well done!
