2019 June Jubilee Recap
Members of the Senior, Sockeye, and Surge Squads competed at the 2019 June Jubilee meet at King County Aquatic Center June 29-30th. IST athletes achieved 397 best times, with 111 of those coming in first time swims, as well as multiple new Gold & Silver, Champs, and Zones cuts.
Competitively, coaches and athletes continued to refine long course races. For most swimmers, June Jubilee was at least their second long-course meet of the year. For other swimmers, it could have been their fifth meet. As swimmers gain more experience in long course racing over the season, we expect them to develop comfort and familiarity with race strategies and race details such that every swim trends toward better execution. We also continued to work on technical refinements and stroke changes as we move toward the end of the season.
Our theme for this meet was “One for all; all for one.” There have been several questions from athletes and coaches about a quote Coach Justin wrote on the whiteboard at Hazen: “It is literally true that you can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed.” We hope that posting this quote enabled us all to recognize that whether you are a senior swimmer or a beginner, swimming comes easily or swimming is difficult, an extrovert or introvert, it takes all types of people from different backgrounds to come together to make a great team! When you feel part of something by helping another person, or when you accept and support them, then that’s where you feel you’re worth something. Not because you’re the fastest, not because you’re the one who’s always there, but simply because you are you. Remember that you also have a role in our team. And as long as there is a role there is belonging.
Athletes from the Senior Squads will be back in action at the upcoming Senior Seattle Open meet the weekend of July 11-13th. Swimmers from the Sockeye and Surge Squads will participate in the Age Group Seattle Open the weekend of July 19-20th. Congratulations to all of our athletes who participated in this meet, and keep up the hard work!
