January Swimmers of the Month Senior/National Group Pre-Senior Group Gold Group Rachel Vandermeyden. Rachel's endurance has improved greatly over the past month. She has exceled at practice, especially on our distance free sets. Her work ethic shows that she is serious about fast swimming at state meet and age group sectionals. From our Mini-Marlins competing for the first time to our seniors racing in their last intrasquad meet, we had a great team turn-out and fun was had by all. SMRT had a great meet last weekend at the Mrytle Beach Lower State Qualifier. We had 113 best times, 13 A's, 65 BB's and 39B times and also 12 new state cuts. Hello Marlins- Due to the City holiday, Martin Luther King, Jr Day, we will adjust our practice schedule for Monday, January 17th. All groups will practice at WLS. Practice times are below. Mini-Marlins- 4:45-5:30 Bronze- 2:45-3:30 p.m. Silver- 5:30-7:00 p.m. Gold- 3:00-4:30 p.m. Pre-Senior- 4:30-6:00 p.m. Senior/National- 7:30-9:00 a.m. and 4:30-6:00 p.m.

We had a great Grand Prix meet this weekend at WLS! SMRT swimmers had 79 best times, 41 B times and 21 BB times. We also had 6 new state cuts at the meet: Callie Temkin, Emma Greig and Robby Gourdie in the 100 free, Emma Greig and Callie Temkin in the 200 free, and Elizabeth Moseley in the 100 fly. Way to go swimmers!

ICE and its uses: Ice can be used to control acute inflammation (swelling) and therefore speed up recovery from an injury. A recent study states that using ice within 2 days on an acute injury can shorten the recovery time. Decreasing the tissue temperature slows down the rate of the chemical reactions that occur during the acute inflammatory response. In addition, decreasing the tissue temperature can reduce the heat, redness, swelling and pain associated with the injury.
