THE GBY SWIM TEAM
The Green Bay YMCA Swim Team is a year round program for all levels of Competitive swimmers from Beginner to National Level.
We offer the following:
- 2 main seasons-Fall/Winter August through March & Spring/Summer April through July. Broken into groups based on ability. Bronze, Silver and Gold.
- Stroke Clinics for GBY team members offered in April.
- Pre Team
Pre Team Classes - Pre Team classes introduce the 4 competitive strokes, and basic fundamental work such as streamlining, turns and dives. A swimmer should have completed at least level 5 of the YMCA swim lesson program or be able to: Tread water for 30 seconds while being able to talk, swim 25 yards of Freestyle with face in and rotary breathing, and 25 yards of Backstroke. Pre Team class allow swimmers to pass from there onto the GBY Swim Team Bronze Practice group when ready. Pre Team Development Classes begin will be offered two times a week.
Bronze - For the beginning and novice swimmers . Requirement to be on the Bronze team are to be 6 years old or older. Able to swim multiple 25 yard lengths of a Front Crawl demonstrating that they know how to rotary breathe and have a legal stroke foundation for Back, Breast, and Butterfly. A GBY Bronze swimmer is also expected to have the maturity to participate in an organized team activity. To include good listening skills and able to take instruction from the coaches. If a potential swimmer is unable to do the 25 yard swim then either more swimming lessons will be recommended or they could try the Pre-swim team class Pre Team Development (see above). A Bronze level swimmer is offered 2-3 practices per week during our swim swim seasons. A Bronze swimmer is expected to attend 2-3 practices per week. Bronze swimmers are welcome to participate in swim meets but swim meets are not required.
Silver - For the competitive swimmers who has passed out of Bronze. Silver team members must be approved by the Head Coach. The requirement for a Silver Swimmer is the ability to swim all four competitive strokes, know how to do all turns and exchanges and to be able to dive off of a starting block. In addition to continuing to improve swim technique, Silver swimmers really start to focus on endurance, strength, speed and race strategy. Swimmers should plan on swimming 2000-3000 yards in a workout. Silver swimmers are offered 4 workouts per week during our swim seasons and are expected to attend 3-4 workouts per week. Part of their training will include dryland. The required set for a Silver Level swimmer will be to swim 20 x 50 x 1:15 holding all within 15 seconds of your best 50 yard Freestyle time. Silver level swimmers are encouraged to participate in swim meets.
Gold - For the elite competitive swimmers. All Gold Team members must be approved by the Head Coach. A Gold Swimmer is expected to attend all practices. A Gold swimmer must be able to train and compete in all four of the competitive strokes. The requirement for a Gold swimmer will be to swim 12 x 200 x 3:15 holding a time within 30-35 seconds of their best 200 Free time. Gold swimmers should plan on swimming 4500-6000 yards on practice days. Part of their training will include dryland. Gold swimmers are highly encouraged to participate in swim meets. The team has scheduled some elite meets for this group to compete in on a regular basis. All Gold level swimmers should attend all elite meets where qualified.
