February is Black History Month

 

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Accordingly, FM Gators (DEI Section) would like to acknowledge the great examples given by black swimmers who made great strides in the sport and became part of the USA National Olympic Team.

Natalie Hinds

Anthony Nesty

Anthony Nesty: First Black Head Coach of U.S. Olympic Swim Team

Last September 20223 “USA Swimming, the National Governing Body for the sport of swimming in the United States announced that Todd DeSorbo and Anthony Nesty will be the head coaches of the U.S. women’s and men’s swim teams, respectively, at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France… An accomplished Olympic athlete in his own right, Nesty was the first black swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal in 1988 and was the first medalist for his native Suriname”.
