John Butcher Director of Competitive Swimming

John’s coaching career began in Alaska with Midnight Sun Swim Team from 2006 to 2009, beginning with the age group program, and culminating as the Interim Head Coach working with the Senior program. He also worked as the Head Coach for Lathrop High School, Hutchinson High School, and Monroe Catholic High School. During his time in Alaska, John coached qualifiers for Junior Nationals, Sectionals, and Alaska State Championships. John coached with Lobo Aquatics in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 2009 to 2011, working with the Age Group Program as well as the Senior Group. He was also a volunteer assistant coach for the University of New Mexico Women’s Swim Team.

Since joining Charger Aquatics in 2012, John has coached State Record Holders, National Top 10 ranked swimmers, and qualifiers for Junior Nationals, Sectionals, and NM State Championships. John has coached swimmers that have been selected to attend the Western Zone Select Camp, National Diversity Select Camp,and National Open Water Select Camp. 

John graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a BA in History in 2009, and a Masters in Sport Administration from the University of New Mexico in 2011. John is an American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) Level-4 Coach.

John is also the Head Coach for the Albuquerque Academy Swimming and Diving Program.

John and his wife Heather have two daughters, Katie and Maggie. 

 

Chris Baker Associate Head Coach

In 2006, Chris began his swim coaching career in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as the Head Coach of the Sandia Heights Swim Team. He then became an Age Group Coach for Duke City Aquatics working with 8 & Under athletes. Throughout the rest of his time at the Sandia satellite branch for both Duke City Aquatics and Charger Aquatics located at Betsy Patterson Swimming Pool, Chris became the Senior Coach and Head Coach for the club program, and the Head Coach of the Sandia High School Swimming & Diving Team. As Head Coach, Chris coached qualifiers for NM State Championships, Zones, NM High School State Championships, Sectionals, Junior Nationals, Nationals, and Olympic Trials. Chris also coached NM State and NM High School State record holders, as well as National Top 10 ranked swimmers.

In 2017, Chris moved to Indiana and became a swim coach and camp counselor at the University of Notre Dame Swim Camp, the Assistant Coach at Butler University where he coached qualifiers for Big East Conference Conference Championships as well as school record holders, and also the Lead Coach of Voyager 2 for Carmel Swim Club. Throughout the rest of his time in Indiana, Chris became a full-time coach, the Lead Coach of Voyager 1, and a Senior 2 Assistant Coach for Carmel Swim Club. Chris coached qualifiers for Indiana Divisional Championships and Indiana Age Group State Championships. Chris also was an Assistant Coach for the Carmel High School Swim Team.

Chris graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor’s degree in English. He also graduated from New Mexico Highlands University with a Master’s degree in Special Education. Chris served on the NM Swimming Board of Directors as the Senior Chair in 2017. Before moving to Indiana in 2017, Chris successfully spearheaded renaming the pool located on Sandia High School’s campus to Betsy Patterson Swimming Pool.

 

 

Lyndsay Irwin Head Developmental Coach

Lyndsay grew up in Albuquerque swimming for in the Sundance League. She started with the Coronado Gators in 2003 and transitioned to the JCC Orcas in 2005. From there, she volunteered as a coach when she was 14 years old and grew into the role of Head Coach for the 9-10 age group by 2014. Lyndsay has taught swimmers of all ages and skill levels. Her favorite stroke is butterfly!

Lyndsay graduated in 2014 from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts from the Interdisciplinary Film & Digital Media Program. On top of coaching, she freelances for online clients with illustration and photography.

Lyndsay coaches our Bronze 1, Silver 1, and Noon Masters groups.

 

 

Jim Van Atta Strength and Performance Coach
Elizabeth Brown Assistant Coach

Coach Liz brings over 30 years of coaching experience to Charger Aquatics, having joined the club in 2015. Prior to moving to Albuquerque, she served as Head Age Group coach at Las Cruces Aquatic Club (LCAT) for nine years. Additionally, she coached in Wisconsin and Illinois, as well as her first coaching job in Shawnee, KS at the age of 16. During this time, Liz has coached numerous state and zones qualifiers, as well as Illinois state record holders and qualifiers to the now-defunct National Age Group Championships.

Liz began her swimming career at the age of six at Osborn Swim Club in Detroit and continued club swimming with the Johnson County YMCA, KC Blazers, Decatur Swim Club and Badger Dolphins. Her collegiate career began at Millikin University (where she was one of three women competing on the men’s team) and she finished her last three years at the University of Wisconsin where she was a National Qualifier and two-year co-captain while majoring in journalism and minoring in history.

In addition to sharing her passion for swimming with the athletes at Charger Aquatics and Albuquerque Academy, Liz is the Executive Director of the Information Display & Entertainment Association (IDEA), a professional association for members of the event presentation industry.

Alan Senn Assistant Coach (AG and Masters)

Alan began swimming for Charger Aquatics at the age of 8, and swam for the team for 10 years, all the way through his senior year. Alan taught swim lessons during high school, then went on to attend college at University of the Cumberlands. Alan was a 4 year Naia All-American and Captain his Senior year. He was a two time Conference Champion his senior year.

Alan graduated in 2021 from University of the Cumberlands with a double major in Coaching and in Fitness and Sports Management.

Alan coaches our Bronze 2, Silver 2, Age Group Championship, as well as our AM Masters.

Julie Maynes Assistant Coach

Julie began swimming at the age of 8 in 2009. By 2013, she was state champion in the 1500m free, as well as a senior zones qualifier. She swam with Charger Aquatics from 2014-2016. She was also a varsity swimmer for Rio Rancho High School and qualified for state in the 500m free and 200m free. After suffering a shoulder injury, she left the sport in high school and is ready to reenter the world of swimming as a coach with just as much passion as before!

Julie recently moved back to Albuquerque in June 2023 after graduating from UMass Boston in 2022 with a B.S. in psychology. She is the Senior State lead coach and the assistant coach for Bronze 1&2.

Elise Dionisopoulos Flex Coach

Elise spent three years coaching at her alma mater, New York University, from 2019 - 2022. She oversaw the sprint group, as well as working with the 100/200 stroke swimmers, and the breaststrokers on the team. In her last season coaching NYU, the team took its largest-ever squad to the NCAA Championship meet, 11 of which were sprinters!

She herself swam for NYU from 2013-2017, attended Nationals all four years of school, earned 10 All-American Honors, set 7 school records, and was a two-year team captain. During undergrad, she earned a Bachelors in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics and has also achieved a Masters in Sports Business from NYU.

She grew up in Manteo, North Carolina, swimming for the Outer Banks Swim Club from the age of 5, and throughout her entire youth. She has been passionate about swimming since she can remember, and does not plan to stop that anytime soon! Elise's favorite event to swim is 50 Free, but her favorite event to watch is the 400 IM!

Elise just moved to Albuquerque in September 2022 with her husband, Nick, and her 21 year old cat, Simon!

Lee Romero Taylor Santa Fe Site Head Coach

Head Site Coach, Lee Romero Taylor, is a lifelong NM resident from Santa Fe.  Lee graduated from Santa Fe Preparatory School and went on to become an NCAA-swimmer and graduate of Lewis and Clark College in Oregon, where he was Captain of the swim team. Lee graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Sociology/Anthropology with a minor in Art in May 2011. Lee was Head Coach of the Kids Club Fun and Fitness in Vancouver, Washington where he coached, motivated and developed age group swimmers. Lee became the head coach of Santa Fe Aquatics in 2015 and, became the Head Site Coach of Charger Aquatics when we became a satellite branch of Charger Aquatics in 2021. He coached the New Mexico Zones team in 2019, and received Age Group Coach of the Year award for 2019 and 2020, and is the Age Group Chair for New Mexico Swimming.
