Head Judge and Assistant Scorer

The Runner will collect the time cards from the Timers and the sweep forms from the Sweep Judges and deliver them to the Head Judge and Assistant Scorer for each event.  The Referee or an assistant will also deliver any DQ slips to the Head Judge and Assistant Scorers for each event.  The Head Judge and Assistant Scorers will process the time cards, sweeps forms and DQ slips for each event, and then provide them to the Data Manager for entry into the meet tracking software.  After the data has been entered into the meet tracking software, the Head Judge is then responsible for verifying that the data entered into the meet tracking software is correct before the data is given the the Announcer or posted at the pool for the swim team to view.

Although the Head Judge and Assistant Scorer will be providing the event results to the Data Manager one event at a time, the Data Manager will most likely provide multiple events at one time for the Head Judge and Assistant Scorer to review.

The following describes how the Head Judge and Assistant Scorer perform their work.

• Identify and circle the middle time for each swimmer, or provide an average if there are only two times.
• Review DQ slip for completeness.  The Head Judge should verify that the Event, Heat, Lane and Team are present on the form, and that the team on the DQ slip matches the swimmer's team.
  Any discrepancies or missing information on the DQ slip should be taken to the Referee for a decision.
• Write DQ next to any swimmer where a valid DQ slip has been provided.
• Compare the sweep results (first and second place finishers for last heat of event).  If sweep results are not the same, they are disregarded.
• Identify the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers, taking into account the sweep results if the sweep results are different.  Note that the sweep results, if they match, may be used to override the 1st, 2nd and even the 3rd place finisher.  The sweeps results could result in a swap of first/second place or even second/third place.
• Write "J" for judges decision next to swimmer is the swiimer's place was a result of the judge's decision (the sweeps results).  Depending on the circumstances, you may need to write a "J" next to swimmers 1 & 2, swimmers 2 & 3 or in a very close event, swimmers 1, 2 & 3.
• Take any questions to the Referee for resolution.
• Hand over the time cards, sweep results and DQ slips for each event to the Data Manager so that they can be entered into the meet tracking software.
• Accept the time cards, sweep results and DQ slips for each event from the Data Manager along with the output from the meet tracking software, and compare the event results with the software output.  Any discrepancies should be reported to the Data Manager to be fixed, and the output should be verified again after the Data Manager has fixed the results in the meet tracking software.
• Any verified output from the meet tracking software should then be passed to the Announcer and the person posting the results at the pool.
