Overview of Volunteer Positions

Timer: Responsible for operating a stopwatch to time swimmers.  No experience is necessary, and training will be provided before the meet.  Timers without experience will be grouped with timers with experience. Timers are expected to stand for long periods of time, but timers will have an upfront view of the events.

Head Timer:  Responsible for operating two stopwatches and assisting Timers who have stopwatch issues.  Previous Timer experience is helpful.  The Head Timer will be standing for long periods of time.

Runner:  Responsible for collecting timer cards from the Timers and delivering them to the Head Judge after each event.  This is a good position to have if you're trying to accumulate steps!  No experience required.

Water Person:  Responsible for purchasing water bottles and ice, bringing water to meet in a cooler, and periodically delivering water bottles to volunteers.  No experience required.

50/50 Sales Person:  Responsible for periodically walking around the venue selling 50/50 raffle tickets as part of a swim team fundraiser.  No experience required.

Clerk of Course:  Organizes swimmers according to lane assignments in advance of events, and helps line up the younger swimmers at the pool just before the swimmers' events.  More than one Clerk of Course is needed for a meet.  It's helpful to have a at least one volunteer who is experienced in the process.  On-the-job training will be provided for volunteers who don't have experience.

Head Judge/Assistant Scorer:  Processes the timer cards and DQ slips prior to data entry by the Data Manager, and reviews data entry after swim results are entered into the computer by the Data Manager. Morning Setup: Arrives at the pool early to help put up canopies, rearrange chairs, put up the backstroke flags, and helps with other tasks needed to prepare for the meet.  No experience necessary.  The time commitment is short, and the Morning Setup volunteers frequently volunteer for other positions during the meet.

Announcer: Makes announcements over the public address system, including announcing events and announcing results.  This position is typically a reserved position for a volunteer who announces at every meet.

Data Manager:  Enters meet results into the computer software. This position is typically a reserved position filled by volunteers who have had previous training with the software and the process.

Ref/Starter:  There are two different positions: Starter for home meets and Referee for away meets.  This position is reserved for someone who is a PMSL certified Ref/Starter.

Stoke & Turn Official:  Determine whether swimmers perform strokers according to the rules of the event.  This position is reserved for someone who is a PMSL certifier Stroke & Turn Official.

Team Rep:  Represents the team to the Referee.  Is responsible for receiving notice of any swimmer disaqualifications (DQs), and is responsible for notifying the referee and/or the league of any protests.  This position is reserved for the team's league representative.

Concession Manager:  Oversees the setup of the concession area, the sale of concessions, the breakdown of the concession area, and the inventory of concessions.  This position is reserved for volunteers who have been identified in advance for this position.

Concession Drink Monitor (early shift):  Arrives at the pool a little early to assist with the setup of the coolers and tubs with ice and drinks.  Maintains ice and drinks throughout shift.  No experience is required.

Concessions Drink Monitor (late shift):  Maintains ice and drinks throughout shift, and helps store drinks, tubs, and coolers at the end of the shift. No experience required.

Concessions Cashier (early shift):  Arrives at the pool a little early to assist with the setup of the concession area.  Collects money and makes change throughout shift. No experience required.

Concessions Cashier (late shift): Collects money and makes change throughout shift.  Helps store concession items at the end of the shift.  No experience required.

Concessions Worker (early shift):  Arrives at the pool a little early to assist with the setup of the concession area.  Helps with concession sales throughout the shift.  No experience required.

Concessions Worker (late shift): Helps with concession sales throughout shift.  Helps store concession items at the end of the shift.  No experience required.
