Note: All ages presented below are intended as a guide only and placement in a group is at the discretion of the coaching staff.

Olympic Way Squad (Pre-competitive)

Coach Leads: Jenna Small & Isabella Fuller

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Provide the opportunity for swimmers to:

  • Gain positive experiences by learning and training together.
  • Introduce pool and land training in a coaching lead environment.
  • Introduce swimmers to competition at in house club competitions.
  • Improve swimmers’ fitness and technique with a wide range of personal goals.
  • Maintain and development appropriate behaviour and responsibilities within an individual and group training environment.

COMMITMENT CRITERIA – SELECTION & ATTENDANCE

  • Committed to a constant attendance in conjunction to other academic, sporting, family, or work commitments.
  • Swimmers must wear GSH branded clothing while competing and representing GSH.

TRAINING SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

  • 3 pool sessions.
  • Approximately 0.5 to 1 hour of dry land per week.

Igniters Squad (Competitive)

Coach Leads: Meghna Maiti, Evey Cimino

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Provide the opportunity for swimmers to:

  • Gain positive experiences by learning and training together.
  • Introduce pool and land training in a coaching lead environment.
  • Introduce swimmers to competition at invitational competitions.
  • Improve swimmers’ fitness and technique with a wide range of personal goals.
  • Maintain and development appropriate behaviour and responsibilities within an individual and group training environment.

COMMITMENT CRITERIA – SELECTION & ATTENDANCE

  • Selection to Igniters Squad by coach discretion.
  • Swimmers are requested to achieve above 85% attendance.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and completion of all pool and dry land training sessions for ~42 weeks of the year.
  • Parents must notify the coach (by email) if the swimmer is away from practice.
  • Committed to a constant attendance in conjunction to other academic, sporting, family, or work commitments.
  • Swimmers must wear GSH branded clothing while competing and representing GSH.

TRAINING SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

  • 4 pool sessions.
  • Approximately 2 hours of dry land per week.
  • Expectation for swimmers to complete pre-pool activation.

Black Squad (Competitive)

Coach Lead: Izzy Hemstead

For athletes 13 years and over that strive for future success, enjoy swimming and want to progress their technique while maintaining an active, healthy, and balanced lifestyle. 

GSH is an IM (Individual Medley: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Front Crawl) based club, utilizing drill progression and stroke technique by developing the deep practice training method; embracing and learning from fails; learning to prepare for a race; following practiced tactics and race execution. Swimmers will be ready to swim a strong 200 IM and 400 free.   

Age range: 13 years & over 

Skills to Join:  Swim 100 freestyle (front crawl), 100 backstroke, and 100 IM with good form; demonstrate perfect streamline; be able to perform 5 meters underwater dolphin kicks off every wall consistently; demonstrate good kick (front & back flutter and dolphin)

Expected Commitment:  Athletes should attend 80% every month and of the competitions that coaches suggest during the season, plus all GSH-organized events.

Bronze Squad (Competitive)

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Provide the opportunity for swimmers to:

  • Gain positive experiences by learning and training together.
  • Develop technique, training, and long-term potential in a performance environment.
  • Strive to achieve qualification to Eastern Regional, Ontario Festivals, and Ontario Youth Junior Championships.
  • Qualify for Eastern Region Swim Camps.

Each swimmer is expected to meet as a minimum the following training and competition commitment criteria:

COMMITMENT CRITERIA – SELECTION & ATTENDANCE

  • Selection to Bronze Squad by coach discretion. The athlete is fully committed to swimming and dryland training.
  • Swimmers are requested to achieve above 90% attendance. Demonstrate punctuality and completion of all pool and dry land training sessions for ~45 weeks of the year.
  • Swimmers must notify the coach (in person or by e-mail) if they are to be away from practice.
  • During exam periods swimmers must discuss and agree a minimum training commitment.
  • Committed to a constant attendance in conjunction to other academic, sporting, family, or work commitments.
  • Self-tapering will not be tolerated. (i.e., missing sessions due to a competition being on the weekend, taper time only happens 2-3 times per season for target meets.)
  • Swimmers must wear GSH branded clothing while competing and representing GSH.

TRAINING SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

  • 5 pool sessions.
  • Approximately 2.5 hours of dry land per week.
  • Expectation for swimmers to complete pre-pool activation.
  • Training volume 18+ km depending on time of season.

Silver / Silver Plus Squad (Competitive)

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Provide the opportunity for swimmers to:

  • Develop technique, training, and long-term potential in a performance environment.
  • Strive to achieve qualification to Festivals, OYJ, OSC, and Canadian Junior Championships.
  • Qualify for Eastern Region and Swim Ontario Camps & Teams.

Each swimmer is expected to meet as a minimum the following training and competition commitment criteria:

COMMITMENT CRITERIA – SELECTION & ATTENDANCE

  • Selection to Silver Squad by coach discretion. The athlete is fully committed to swimming and dryland training.
  • Swimmers are requested to achieve above 90% attendance. Demonstrate punctuality and completion of all pool and dry land training sessions for ~46 weeks of the year.
  • Swimmers must notify the coach (in person or by e-mail) if they are to be away from practice.
  • During exam periods swimmers must discuss and agree a minimum training commitment.
  • A swimmer’s participation in another sport or non-curricular activity is not considered an excusable absence.
  • Self-tapering will not be tolerated. (i.e., missing sessions due to a competition being on the weekend, taper time only happens 2-3 times per season for target meets.)
  • Swimmers must wear GSH branded clothing while competing and representing GSH.

TRAINING SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

  • 6 (Silver) to 7 (Silver Plus) pool sessions, determined by the Lead Group Coach and Head Coach.
  • Approximately 3 hours of dry land per week.
  • Expectation for swimmers to complete pre-pool activation.
  • Training volume 35+ km depending on time of season.

Gold Squad (Competitive)

Coach Lead: Greg Kozell

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Provide the opportunity for swimmers to:

  • Develop stroke specific and event specialization.
  • Strive to achieve qualification to OYJ, OSC, CJC, CSC and Canadian Swimming Trials.
  • Qualify for Eastern Region, Swim Ontario, and Swimming Canada Camps & Teams.
  • Swim on Junior & Senior International Teams

Each swimmer is expected to meet as a minimum the following training and competition commitment criteria:

COMMITMENT CRITERIA – SELECTION & ATTENDANCE

  • Selection to Gold Squad by coach discretion. The athlete is fully committed to swimming and dryland training.
  • Swimmers must maintain above 95% attendance. Demonstrate punctuality and completion of all pool and dry land training sessions for ~48 weeks of the year.
  • If a swimmer misses a training session during the week this must be made up at some point either in the same week or the following week.
  • Swimmers must notify the coach (in person or by e-mail) if they are to be away from practice.
  • During exam periods swimmers must discuss and agree a minimum training commitment.
  • A swimmer’s participation in another sport or non-curricular activity is not considered an excusable absence.
  • Self-tapering will not be tolerated. (i.e., missing sessions due to a competition being on the weekend, taper time only happens 2-3 times per season for target meets.)
  • Swimmers must wear GSH branded clothing while competing and representing GSH.

TRAINING SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

  • 7 to 9 pool sessions, determined by the Head Coach.
  • Approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours of dry land per week.
  • Expectation for swimmers to complete pre-pool activation and post-pool recovery.
  • Training volume 45+ km depending on time of season.
