| Thursday Morning Update on Pool 11/8/2012 6:15:44 PM Thursday Update: MRD is working really hard to get the pool reopened by Monday for Masters. The new pump should be installed Saturday, and Sunday they will be working to get the pool chemically balanced and up to temperature (although it will most likely be a bit cool for Masters on Monday). | A note from Coach Silas 10/31/2012 5:16:02 PM Marlins Parents, I am looking forward to another wonderful Marlins fall meet. I would like to remind everyone that hosting a meet is like hosting a party; it can be an intense amount of work but when it is successful it can be rewarding and fun. I ask you each to volunteer as much as possible to make no one feel overwhelmed. Swimming is not a “drop them off at the door or field and pick them up when they are done” activity. It requires a little more help from parents. I feel that your involvement solidifies the family connection that makes us unique. SWIM TIMES What is a time in the program? Is it a time from a yard meet? A time from a Long Course meet then converted? A Short course meter time, converted into LC. Since we swim in different size pools, this can be confusing and every team does things differently. Converted times are not always effective, accurate or helpful. They are just a poor guideline of how a swimmer’s performance in one pool, would potentially swim in another. With this in mind, the Marlins try to put times into the program that are from an actual course swum- not converted.( ie if we swim in a yard meet, best yard times are entered. If we swim in LC then best LC times are entered. And in the case of this meet, we are swimming short course meters, so best SCM times will be used.) This is not always possible but it is what we attempt. Sometimes this may result in an old time or none at all in the program. That is the way the coaches want it to be. My caution is that when you look at a time in a program, think twice. It just may not be one you can trust or one you should use to judge a swimmer’s performance. We all want feedback, but times are just one of many elements in improvement. A swimmer may have had an excellent swim and yet not achieve their best performance as judged by time. I recommend that you as parents soften the focus on times as a judge of performance. Instead • Have a big smile and a “great job” for the little ones • Have a warm towel and healthy snack • Ask, what did your coach say? • Ask, what was your favorite part? • Challenge and reward them for trying new events, if their coach thinks they’re ready. Saturday is the triathlon. This is our senior group’s yearly community service. It has to be one of the easiest opportunities to gain service hours for graduation and at the same time to earn funds for the senior group, in the past we have bought the TV for the underwater camera, Tempo Trainers, helped pay for a Christmas Trip. This year I would like to again use it for a training trip. This is what the team needs from you. Please be at the pool at 7:45am. It is as zoo around the pool at that time so plan ahead. If you have signed up to do the Triathlon we will do our best to get in into the first or last heats so that you can help with counting. We will go to Don Jilberto’s afterwards for Lunch. We need 15 swimmers and about 4-6 parents to work this event efficiently. |

The Marlins will be hosting a car wash this Saturday, August 18th from 10-4 in the Murdoch’s parking lot. We have a dual meet in Ouray on Wednesday, 11 july, in the early evening. Burger/potluck after. There are no relays. Cost is $2.50/swimmer. It is open to all 14under swimmers who do NOT have a state qualifying time.
We, the coaches, strongly recommend attendance!!! this is a good oppportunity for the swimmers in dale's/lar's/clint's/ellen's groups PLUS any of those in si's group who do NOT have state times..

The pool will NOT be open tomorrow. They have discovered that there is a broken valve in the pool - a big valve. They will be working on finding a new valve and installing it.

| Press Release from the MRD 6/13/2012 10:36:18 PM
As of 1pm June 13th, both the indoor and outdoor pools at the Aquatic center are shut down due to unexpected mechanical issues. Regarding the outdoor pool, on Tuesday evening, the motor casing on the outdoor pool circulation pump broke. Without this motor working properly, water is prevented from being circulated and filtered. A new motor casing has been ordered and is being rush delivered to the Aquatic center.
On Wednesday morning, the circulation pump for the indoor pool also began malfunctioning. The result is the same as with the outdoor pool circulation pump: pool water is not circulating or being filtered. Maintenance staff and aquatic contractors are troubleshooting this issue currently.
Without these mechanical systems functioning properly, the pool must be closed to ensure patron safety. This is also in compliance with State law. The rest of the Aquatic facility will remain open including the multi-purpose rooms and administrative offices.
We understand the frustration of many who want to use the pool for drop-in use and for programs, especially given the warm weather of the summer. Average daily summer attendance at the pool is over 500 and we understand the tremendous inconvenience this causes. We sincerely apologize and assure the public that we are doing everything in our power to fix these unexpected mechanical issues as soon as possible. Ellen's group will practice Thursday from 4-5:30pm and Friday from 4:30 - 5:30. Also, everyone in Ellen's Group needs a snorkel & hand paddles for the summer season. You can purchase these by clicking the SwimOutlet icon on the left side of the website. Most swimmers ages 11-12 will need small, but some may need extra small. Please note that our Marlins home summer meet has been changed to July 6-8 . This was done to allow Marlins families a weekend off in between our meet and the summer Western Slope meet which we will be hosting in Grand Junction.
Due to the general lack of enthusiasm from the majority of Marlins families for raising funds with the Swim-A-Thon over the past few years, the board has decided to cancel it for this year. Each family will still be responsible for the annual $150 per year contribution, and if you would like to raise those funds, please consider taking advantage of the Scrip program.If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact any board member. |

| Officials' Clinic During Western Slope Champs 2/11/2012 6:05:24 PM
Robert Scandary and Elaine Gerson will be running a new officials clinic at CMU during WSL champs, so if you have any parents who may be interested please forward this on to them.
In order to keep people from having to drive down a day early... we will begin the official's clinic at 10:00 (no later than 10:30) on Saturday morning. We will do 2 hrs, followed by a short lunch, then resume at 1:00 to conclude by 3:00. New officials will be able to stand on deck on Sunday to begin their training. |

We will be having a dual meet at Colorado Mesa University on Saturday, December 17th. Here is the meet information.
To sign up for the meet, please send an email to Erika at [email protected] and let her know you intend on swimming. The coaches will enter swimmers in events. Please do this as soon as possible to help her and the coaches out.
Warm Ups start at 9. The meet will run from 10:00-12:00. Lunch for the swimmers will be provided and followed by a stroke clinic form 1-3pm. Parents are asked to help run the meet. When the meet is complete, you are welcome to leave your swimmers with the coaches, have a nice lunch, do some holiday shopping, take a nap and then be back to pick them up at 3:00! |

The Montrose Marlins are advertising for a new Team Manager. This position takes care of all of the administrative duties of running a swim team. A detailed job description can be found here.
If you are interested in applying, please apply by sending in a resume, and answers to the questions listed below. The applications must be received by Monday, October 10th. They may be mailed to Montrose Marlins, PO Box 1397, Montrose, CO 81402, or emailed to [email protected]. The applications will be reviewed at the board meeting on October 13th, and a decision made soon after.
Application questions:
1. Please tell us about any accounting experience or special skills related to bookkeeping that you have.
2. Please list what types of computer skills you have, especially software programs that you have used
3. What additional skills do you have that would be used by a Team Manager?

I am sorry that I must continue to change out posted schedule but I do not have a bus available to the team on next Tuesday. Therefore, the team will be going to delta on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. I have a 20 passenger bus on both swim days next week and should be able to accommodate most everyone.

| Black Canyon Tri - For Silas' Swimmers 9/7/2011 5:44:15 PM
The Annual Black Canyon Triathlon is just a month away. Saturday, October 1st. This event is the only organized activity used as a senior team fundraiser. We use the proceeds directly for the senior training group.
2 years ago we used it to buy the TV for the underwater camera, last year we used it to help pay for the Christmas training trip. This has been a lucrative and quality fundraising opportunity.
• All swimmers must help out (I will assume that you will be their unless you let me know of your conflict Helping out with another group is not an option)
• Please sign up to be in the triathlon we will heat you so that you can still help with counting.
• Your hours will count towards volunteer hours at the High School.
• 4-6 parents helping would be great. (Please let me know)

The Triathlon will held on Saturday, October 1st. Montrose/Olathe Elementary students compete in the School Cup which starts at 8am. Middle/High School/Adults compete in the Black Canyon Sprint Tri which starts at 9am.
Swimmers who are in elementary school - we highly encourage you to find two other friends and make a team and compete in the School Cup! The Registration Form can be found here. For more information check out the website site:bctri.com/schoolcup. Maps are available there.

| Meet Signup Available for Cortez and Aspen 4/24/2011 10:51:54 PM
Meet signups are available for the Cortez Meet, June 10-12th. We are hoping to have the entire team compete in Cortez. The 8 & under session (short course yards) is on Friday at noon. 8 & Unders are also able to compete on Saturday and Sunday, but they will be competing in Long Course Meters, which means no 25s.
Meet signups are also available for the Aspen Meet (June 25-26). We are also hoping our entire team will be competing in Aspen.

The Marlins will be having tryouts for the summer season. Tryouts for swimmers aged 10 and under will be on Monday, April 25th at 5:45pm. Tryouts for swimmers for 11 and overs will be on Tuesday, April 26th at 5:45pm. Swimmers will be asked to swim a length of freestyle and backstroke. If more strokes are known, you will have a chance to share those also. In addition to being able to swim at least 2 lengths of the pool, we ask that all trying out are water safe and comfortable in the water. for more information, please contact Cindy Sperling 970-596-7274. |

| Margaret Hoelzer Coming to Cortez Invitational 3/10/2011 1:20:12 PM
Margaret Hoelzer will be coming to our Cortez Invitational, June 10-12, 2011. She is a former World Record Holder, Silver Medalist in the 200 Back and Bronze Medalist in the 100 Back in the 2008 Olympics.
At the 2007 World Championships she broke the American Record in the 200m backstroke and won her first World Championship in dramatic fashion. She believes that if you put your mind to it, anything is possible and she has stuck by those words. In 2003, she was the top ranked American in the 200m and after earning silver in the 200m backstroke at the 2005 World Championships, Hoelzer broke through for her first gold in the event at the 2007 World Championships where she dropped nearly two seconds off her best time. In 2008, Margaret qualified for the Olympic team in three events: 100m back, 200m back, and 4x100 medley relay and then headed to her second Olympics as world champion in the 200m backstroke. In Beijing, Margraet medaled in the 100 Back (Bronze), 200 Back (Silver), and 400 Medley Relay (Silver).When she's not swimming, Margaret enjoys sharing her Olympic spirit and experience with young swimmers and Olympic Hopefuls all around the country by teaching youth swim clinics and speaking to local communities. After earning her degree in psychology with a minor in criminology, Margaret is pursuing a graduate degree in sociology at Auburn. Outside of her swimming career, she says she would like to continue to help children who have been abused, or study the criminals who abuse them, such as sex offenders through her work with National Children's Advocacy Center. Her goal is to provide information and awarness to the public in addition to trying to help people who have been abused realize they are not alone and they should seek help and treatment.

| Change in Sunday Warm Up Time for WS Champs 2/14/2011 7:20:18 PM
Sunday's meet schedule will be moved forward one hour. So Session 4: Warm up 8:30 a.m.; Session start 9:45 a.m. Session 5: Warm-ups start immediately following Session 3 but not before noon; Session starts 90 minutes following start of warm-ups.
Please note that there is a chance that morning and afternoon sessions could be combined due to the number of participants. More information regarding this will be available Wednesday morning. |
