Dubuque Area Swimmin’ Hurricanes Scholarship Information

 

 

Philosophy: Dubuque Area Swimmin’ Hurricanes (hereafter referred to as DASH) would like to provide an opportunity to all eligible community members that would like to participate in a competitive swim team regardless of financial status. 

Purpose: Provide scholarships that grant financial assistance in the form of free or reduced fees for individuals and families financially unable to pay the established program fees. 

 

Full Scholarship Fee Coverage:

  1. Training group fees waived, team swim cap provided
  2. Scholarship does NOT cover USA Swimming registration
    1. Swimmers can apply for USA Swimming Outreach scholarship to assist with their registration fee.  See below for more information.
  3. Equipment and swim suit:  recipient’s family is responsible for purchase of equipment (i.e. googles, training group required equipment such as fins, paddles, etc.) and practice swim suits
  4. USA Swimming meets: if the recipient of the scholarship would like to participate in USA Swim meets, the required meet fees are the responsibility of the family and will NOT be covered by the DASH scholarship (those eligible for USA Swimming Outreach will have reduced meet fees).
  5. DASH reserves the right to terminate any and all scholarship assistance at any point during the fiscal year due to extreme financial crisis of the team.  DASH will give 30 day notification to the recipient upon removal of scholarship assistance.

  2. Scholarship does NOT cover team USA Swimming registration

  3. Equipment and swim suit: recipient’s family is responsible for purchase of equipment (i.e. googles, training group required equipment such as fins, paddles, etc.) and practice and team swim suits

 Expectations of Recipient and Family:

  1. Provide documentation of financial need.
  2. Accrued charges in swimmer’s account must be paid by the 15th of each month.
  3. Recipient is expected to attend at least minimal practices designated per training group per week.  Notification of illness/injury or other circumstances preventing attendance at practices need to be reported to Head Coach.
  4. Recipient is expected to attend and participate in meets held in Dubuque.
  5. Recipient is expected to participate in all team functions including fundraising.
    1. Recipient’s fundraising credits accrued will be applied to fees as well as cost of swim equipment and apparel orders.  Credits at the end of the season will not be refunded directly to the recipient but can carry over to the next season, except from summer to fall due to DASH's end of fiscal year.
  6. Recipient’s family is expected to complete the number of work sessions that is designated by their training group.  Refer to work session policy for further information.
  7. Recipient must remain in good standing with program.  Violations to DASH’s code of conduct, Safe Sport policies, and bullying policies by either recipient and/or family shall be grounds for removal of financial assistance.

Eligibility:

Proof of Financial Need: 

Applicant’s family must qualify for Free or Reduced-Price lunches through Dubuque Community Schools or be able to provide documentation of financial heart ship that supports the need for reduced team fees.

Application:

          Application form 

  • Fall/Winter season applications can submitted August 1st to October 31
  • Spring/Summer season application can be submitted March 1st to April 31st

         Applications will be reviewed for consideration at the September, October, March and April DASH             Board of Directors meeting.

  1. Provide proof of financial need as stated in the eligibility section.
  2. Provide a letter of recommendation from an individual not related to the scholarship candidate, such as a coach, teacher, etc.
  3. Provide a short essay of why the candidate should be considered for the scholarship.  Please provide information regarding the candidate’s character and what the opportunity would mean to mean to him/her.  Also include any other extenuating circumstances that may be relevant to the candidate participation on the DASH.
  4. A separate application must be filled out for each swimmer. Awards within a family may vary.
  5. Scholarships are awarded for the current swim season only.  An application must be submitted for each new full year season.

USA Swimming Registration Fee Information:

Outreach Membership is for a calendar year period. Outreach program is to provide reduced membership for economically disadvantaged youth. The applicant MUST include one of the following proofs to be considered for the reduced fee, along with athlete registration form: proof of reduced/free lunch program; show proof of food stamps; show proof of annual income. To show a person is economically disadvantaged the burden of proof rest with the applicant.
