Family support

Don't compare your swimmer with teammates or competitors. They make progress in separate events and they grow and mature at different times. It's okay for your swimmer to be competitive and push themselves by racing teammates in a friendly manner, but family members should stay out of it. Enjoy this amazing experience we have. Be a supporter of your swimmer through the ups and downs. Trust us: your swimmer's time will come.

Please follow these guidelines when supporting your swimmer:

  1. When they come to you after a practice or race and are disappointed in how they did, always tell them: "I love to watch you swim." Never coach or critique their performance. That is for the coach to discuss with them.
  2. Remember that their experience with the sport and the swim lifestyle belongs to them alone. Let them take ownership over and responsibility for their success.
  3. Support a fun experience. Do not pressure them with unrealistic expectations or compare them to others.
  4. Be involved with activities! The families who volunteer are the ones who have successful swimmers. Those who drop their swimmers off at the curb and never watch a practice or meet usually have swimmers who quit.
  5. Give them room to breathe. The pool should be a place where they can't wait to see their friends and have fun. Do not hover. Give them the freedom to become the best they can be on their own.
  6. Maintain self control at all times and recognize each role. Swimmers swim. Coaches coach. Officials officiate. Families watch and support.

As a Waveryeders family member, please abide by the following Code of Conduct:

  1. Do not coach or instruct the Team or any swimmer at a practice or meets.
  2. Do not interfere with Coaches on the pool deck.
  3. Demonstrate good sportsmanship by conducting yourself in a manner that earns the respect of other swimmers and families with positive communications/actions.
  4. Support other swimmers and families with positive communications/actions.
  5. During competitions, questions or concerns regarding decisions made by Meet Officials must be directed to our Coaches only.
  6. Understand that criticizing, name-calling, or use of abusive language/gestures directed toward any swimmer, Coach, or Official will not be tolerated.
