Below are the requirements that must be met in order to pass out of the particular swim level.

Swim Lessons Overview

Parent Tot (PT)

If interested, please email [email protected]. The child must be able to walk to the instructor, parent or babysitter on their own to participate in the Parent Tot class. Parents/babysitters are expected to be in the water every class. (On a class-by-class basis this is subject to change depending on class size.)

  • Gain confidence in the water
  • Water entry/exit
  • Beginning splashing
  • Beginning blowing bubbles
  • Submerging
  • Kicking
  • Jumping into pool (assisted)
  • Floating
  • Listening to directions

3 to 4 year olds (Max of 4 swimmers per class)

  • Water entry/exit

  • Kicking on step
  • Reaching and pulling
  • Jumping - to instructor
  • Floating (assisted)
  • Go underwater (assisted)
  • Pick up rings off the steps
  • Listening to directions

Level 1

  • Front float (assisted)
  • Back float (assisted)
  • Exit using ladder/side
  • Go underwater (unassisted)
  • 5 bobs - fully submerged
  • Monkey along wall
  • Kicking on front (assisted with kickboard/instructor)
  • Kicking on back (assisted with kickboard/instructor)
  • Streamline (out of water)
  • Scooping with arms (walking in water)
  • Hold breath 3 seconds (face in)
  • Review pool rules
  • Know ways to get help

Level 2

  • Front float (unassisted)
  • Back float (unassisted)
  • Kick on front (without kickboard/instructor)
  • Kick on back (without kickboard/instructor)
  • Freestyle/Front crawl (no breath, 10 feet)
  • Backstroke/Back crawl (10 feet)
  • Side breathing on wall 
  • Pick up rings off bottom
  • Jump into deep water (unassisted in deep end of shallow area)
  • Tread water (30 seconds)
  • Hold breath (5 seconds)
  • Level off with streamline
  • 10 bobs
  • Turn over (both directions)
  • Sitting dive in deep water (with streamline)

Level 3

  • Freestyle (width of shallow area)
  • Backstroke (width of shallow area)
  • Side breathing with freestyle
  • Intro to sculling
  • Intro to Breaststroke kick
  • Tread water (2 minutes)
  • Streamline kick past flags
  • Jump into deep water (block end of pool)
  • 15 bobs
  • Kneeling dive (with streamline)
  • Jump with PFD from side
  • Learn diving rules

Level 4

  • Freestyle (25 meters)
  • Backstroke (25 meters)
  • Elementary backstroke (25 meters)
  • Streamline kick on back (25 meters)
  • Intro to Breastroke
  • Intro to Butterfly
  • Breaststroke kick with board (25 meters)
  • Dolphin kick (½ length of pool)
  • Sculling on front and back
  • Sidestroke (½ length of pool - both sides)
  • Intro to flip turn - somersault at wall 
  • Tread water (5 minutes)
  • Survival float (5 minutes)
  • Standing dive (with streamline)
  • Jump from board with PFD
  • Observe CPR

Level 5

  • Freestyle (50 meters)
  • Backstroke (50 meters)
  • Breaststroke (½ pool length)
  • Butterfly (½ pool length)
  • Sidestroke (25 meters both sides)
  • Streamline kick (25 meters front and back)
  • Scull (25 meters)
  • Underwater swim (3 body lengths)
  • Backstroke flip turn
  • Intro to open turn
  • Review rescue breathing and CPR
  • Tread water (8 minutes)
  • Survival float (8 minutes)
  • Racing start from block

Level 6

  • Freestyle  (100 meters with flip turns)
  • Backstroke  (100 meters with flip turns)
  • Breaststroke (25 meters)
  • Butterfly (25 meters)
  • 100 Individual Medley (25 meters of each stroke - Fly, Back, Breast, Free * continuous)
  • Tread water (10 minutes)
  • Review rescue breathing and CPR
  • Throwing and reaching rescue
  • Freestyle and Backstroke flip turns
  • Breaststroke and Butterfly open turns
  • Pike surface dive
  • Tuck surface dive
  • Stride jump

Level 7

  • Freestyle (200 meters with flip turns)
  • Backstroke (200 meters with flip turns)
  • Breaststroke (50 meters)
  • Butterfly (50 meters)
  • 1 length no breath with fins
  • Retrieve brick from diving well
  • Review rescue breathing and CPR
  • 500 meter swim continuous (At least a 200 required freestyle)
  • 200 meter IM (individual medley)
  • Tread water (12 minutes)
  • Underwater swim (15 yards)
  • Check heart rate
