Head Coach — Briarhill Swim Team (2026 Season)
The Briarhill Swim Team (BHST), a community-driven recreational swim program based in Dublin, CA, is seeking a Head Coach for the 2026 summer season. We’re looking for a dynamic leader who is passionate about teaching swimmers of all ages and abilities, building team spirit, and creating a positive, inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the coaching staff: Help recruit and lead training of assistant coaches, provide ongoing mentorship and oversight so all age groups are covered with consistent, engaged, hands-on coaching.
- Swimmer development: deliver active, on-deck instruction with strong emphasis on stroke technique (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle), turns, starts, breakouts, and race preparation. Offer real-time feedback and corrections, during practices and immediately following races.
- Practice planning & program design: Design and run structured, age-appropriate practices that balance skill development, conditioning, and fun. Incorporate optional skill-focused practice sessions (e.g., flip turns, relay exchanges, underwater kick). Establish a season-long program plan for each age group with clear goals and success metrics.
- Meets & competition: :ead the team during swim meets, ensuring equitable coach coverage across lanes/age groups, provide pre-race and post-race feedback and splits while ensuring a positive experiences for swimmers at all ability levels.
- Coach mentoring: Conduct a preseason coach training workshop (drill progressions, teaching technique, practice and meet strategies, adapting for age/ability), hold regular assistant-coach debriefs and on-deck coach observations to maintain a high coaching standard.
- Culture & community: Promote fairness, inclusion, fun and camaraderie within the team. Model and embed team values (e.g., respect, growth mindset, effort, resilience). Engage with the board, swimmers, parents and approach all team events as a way to strengthen the BHST spirit.
- Communication & operations: Collaborate with parents, assistant coaches and the BHST Board. Communicate swimmer progress, coaches development, expectations and team updates clearly and regularly.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 - 5 years of prior swim-coaching experience (youth, high school or club level preferred).
- Strong knowledge of competitive swimming techniques and training methods (stroke mechanics, starts, turns, underwater work, age-group development).
- Ability to engage and motivate swimmers ages 5-18 at all ability levels.
- Excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills.
- Current certifications or ability to obtain prior to season: CPR/First Aid, Lifeguard, Safe Sport, USA Swimming coaching credential (or willingness to acquire).
- Availability: Season runs May–July 2026 (with some preseason planning in spring). Practices are primarily weekday afternoons/evenings; swim meets on weekends.
What Success Looks Like
By the end of the 2026 season, the Head Coach will have:
- Developed and shared a full season practice plan with coaches and parents, by end of May.
- Ensured that the majority of swimmers show measurable improvement in at least one technical element (e.g., streamline posture, improved turn time, more efficient stroke) and that all swimmers feel supported and visible.
- Ran at least one special practice or skill session (e.g., turn clinic, relay day), along with a coach-training workshop for assistant coaches.
- Maintained or increased team retention and engagement (swimmer practice attendance, meet attendance, fewer missed races, fewer drop-outs, positive word-of-mouth in the community).
- Received strong feedback from swimmers, parents and coaches around team culture (e.g., “I feel part of the team,” “Coaches give helpful feedback,” “We are inclusive and fun”).
- Ensured all coach certifications are up to date and assistant coaches are trained consistently.
