Candy Cane Thank you for being so great for the coaches while I was away. Coach Kristine, every time she sees this group tells me how much you all have grown. Not just physically, but how you support each other, how you communicate emotions, how you explain process-oriented thinking/planning, among the variety of growth you all have shown. Do not think this is the end of your limit, ever. Something I keep talking to swimmers about is Katie Ledeky; she went 5 years without a best time. That is not,...

Candy Cane Great job battling in the cold, getting aggressive in the mornings, and dealing with long sessions with lots of downtime. Mike was thrilled to see some of the performances, as was I. There were a handful of races that were so distant from practice performance that it suggested something was going on in race prep or minds before, during, and after the races. Athletics demands everything and promises nothing. All Senior 1 swimmers who raced had at least one best time. The only other stat I found: everyone...

Candy Cane Classic Senior 2 and Senior 3 did a great job this long weekend at Candy Cane Classic in Phoenix! There was a lot of fast swimming. Senior 3 swimmers showed up and raced with a new/best time in almost all events! I will usually say that a good race is a boring race, only because the swimmers have rehearsed speed, technique, and effort so much that the race itself isn’t anything out of expectation, which happened for many of the races that popped off. Bruss’s 500 comes to...

AG1: Candy Cane Classic Recap What a weekend at the Candy Cane Classic ~ three days and five sessions of early mornings, late nights, and a lot of racing… our swimmers rose to the occasion! Multiple day competition weekends require intentional preparation, consistent fueling, rest between sessions, mental focus, warm-ups and warm-downs... sometimes more yardage than we’ve ever done in 48 hours! Many athletes raced events twice a day, which is demanding, yet valuable. Meets like this are a key part of swimmer development, and it’s important to remember that...

With a couple meets under our belt this short-course season, most swimmers have already refreshed their best times. Now the focus shifts to sharpening the small details that create big progress. As we’ve been saying: if you want to accomplish something you’ve never accomplished before, you have to be willing to do something you’ve never done. AG1’s theme continues to guide us: Listening. Putting yourself in a position to hear, learn, and give space for others to do the same. Understanding. Asking questions, seeking clarity, watching examples. Application. Trying the...
