Everyones' A Winner; Baby, That's the Lie By Thornton McCamish THE AGE (Melbourn, Australia, Daily Newspaper.) IN A WORLD WITHOUT LOSERS, WHERE EVEN PARTY GAMES ARE RIGGED WITH REWARDS FOR ALL, ARE OUR CHILDREN BEING CHEATED OF THE RIGHT TO FAIL? They don't play pass the parcel like they used to. Go to a kid's party these days and you'll see that the host parent has rigged the parcel so that each time the music stops and a layer of wrapping comes off, a chocolate frog pops out. It's...
Watching Your Child at Swim Lessons or Swim Practice For over four years I watched my daughter swim under the direction of other coaches. I have also watched her at basketball practice and games, and dance, and figure skating. I know the joy of watching her in these activities. I also know and understand the overwhelming desire to direct, correct, encourage, and sometimes scold my child at practice. But those are not proper parental behaviors once I have released her into the care of a coach or teacher. As...

This year’s Swim-A-Thon was one of the most successful in recent memory. Our team goal was to raise $5,000, and we beat that goal by nearly $2,000! Because of the overwhelming success of this fundraiser, our club has been able to purchase an iPad with a waterproof case for underwater stroke analysis and video demonstration. The club will also be purchasing an iPad Mini and case in the fall for the same reason. This great training tool has been made available to our coaches because of the Rapids’ huge efforts!...
Forged By Adversity Guy Edson, ASCA Staff I was following a school bus the other day when it stopped to pick up two middle school aged boys. Because of the framed glass emergency door in the back of the bus I could watch the two boys playfully tussling with each other as they made their way to the very last seat of the bus. Finally the bus began to move again – it seemed to take forever just to pick up two boys. I then thought back to my...

The final weekend before going out for Spring Break, the Richmond Rapids hosted one of their largest meets ever – LMR Short Course Championships. The meet ran over two days, with twelve-and-unders in the morning, and 13-and-overs racing in the afternoons. No heats and finals scenario here. The Rapids had to race hard on the first go, relying on solid tactics and technique to finish the season on a positive note. Results were hugely successful, with Rapids dropping times left and right, regularly finishing in the top three spots....

The Richmond Rapids have just wrapped up their short course season with a pair of major championship events: Western Canadian Nationals in Saskatoon, and AAA Provincial Championships in Victoria. The Rapids sent a team of five to Westerns, three of which were veterans of the event. The roster included Brandon de Costa, Brandon Crawford, Michael Jakac-Sinclair, Serena Xue, and Tony Zeng. This is the second highest level of competition in Canada, second only to this year’s World Trials. “Westerns can be intimidating, but our rookies didn’t let that slow...

The Richmond Rapids Swim Club competed at the Swim BC Short Course AA Championships last weekend in Surrey, BC. The meet is one of the last of the short-course season, so the Rapids were looking to put training into action against clubs from all around the province. “There were two goals,” said Head Assistant Coach Drew McClure. “The first is to get some experience in a heats and finals scenario, where swimmers must be fast in the morning to make finals, and then try to improve their races at...

The Richmond Rapids Swim Club is gearing up for the short course championship season, with their last tune-up meets before competing province-wide. A team of 44 Rapids competed at Vancouver Aquatic Center at the CDSC New Year’s Invitational. This squad represented the fastest age group swimmers in the club, with one of two goals in mind. Either get their qualifications for AAA Provincials, the highest competition level within BC, or improve their seeding at AAAs. This was a tough task, no doubt. “December and January are about the toughest...
Published by the American Swimming Coaches Association. The Biggest Question.... By John Leonard In all of age group sports, the biggest question for every parent is..."How much to be involved." In every sport from tennis to golf, to gymnastics and swimming, there are horror stories of absolutely awful parental interference, with tragic consequences for the career of the young age group athlete. Yet every one of us loves our children like nothing else in the world. So, how does this happen? I think it's because as parents, we're all looking...
