Practice: 10:00-11:15am
  • When Regis Jesuit High School has a home swim meet (usually on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays) the Dolphins and Blue Group will alternate with the Silver and Black Groups
  • For those over-achieving swimmers who will be out of town during a vacation or any break, I have posted several workouts on our website.....White and Blue Group Workouts
PRACTICE

I've attached a few technique video links to this week's email (breaststroke underwater pulls, backstroke, and open turns).  Unfortunately, I can't get video links to post to our Newsletter.  Here are some of the main points.....
  • Breaststroke Underwater Pull Outs
    • 1-2-3 pull, 1-2 kick your hands to the surface (remember, your hands need to get to the surface before you start your first stroke).
    • For our more experienced kids.....1-2-3 dolphin kick, 1-2 kick your hands to the surface.  I don't typically introduce the dolphin kick to our little ones until they have a complete understanding of breaststroke and underwater swimming (only one dolphin kick allowed).
  • Backstroke Turns
    • The most important element in doing a backstroke turn is knowing your backstroke finish count (at race pace).  As I always tell the kids, "If I see you in the parking lot and ask for your backstroke count, you better know it."  The answer can't be 5-6 (guessing), or I don't know.  Know your backstroke finish count!!!
    • When you know your finish count, the turn is pretty easy.....finish count minus one, pull and throw, then flip.
  • Open Turns (butterfly and breaststroke)
    • I have shown our Blue Groupers the best way to improve their open turns.  Do it every time you leave the wall!
    • Jab your brother and call your mother.....this old school saying has been around forever, but it works.
SHOUT OUT

This week's shout out goes to those kids who are willing to listen, take advice, and make changes (this year's Blue Groupers are standouts with these skills).  I spoke to several swimmers at the COSA Swim Meet and asked them to make a few adjustments when they returned to practice.  Most worked on those changes this week (it was noticeable).....if not, you might want to jump on board as you are losing ground.

I get change is difficult, and to be honest, I'm not always right with my evaluation (don't tell the kids).  However, I do appreciate those swimmers who at least give change/improvement a shot.  It's called helping yourself.....all I can ask.

STROKE CLINICS

Get a Feel for the Water

  • This has always been one of my favorite clinics.  Swimmers will learn/perform a number of sculling drills for all four strokes to help them get a better grip/feel for the water.  Drills will help with hand/arm positioning for a better pull.
