Hi! I’m Coach Brian, and I’ve been part of the Machine Aquatics coaching staff for the past three years. If you’ve ever been to a meet, you’ve probably seen me—the big guy in the camo hat calling for timers!

I grew up swimming competitively in MCSL, PVS (RMSC), and later at Frostburg State University. Along the way, I earned multiple MCSL records, won a gold medal at Zones representing PVS, and set school records at Frostburg.

My coaching philosophy is simple: technique, technique, and more technique. I believe swimming should be both fun and challenging—because it builds strong athletes and teaches lifelong values.

Machine is truly a special program. My daughter swims here too, and I wouldn’t want her anywhere else. The positive environment fosters growth, confidence, and community—helping kids become great swimmers and even better people.

My love for swimming began when I joined my local YMCA team during middle school. It didn’t take long for me to realize swimming was the only sport I wanted to pursue. I went on to join Excel Aquatics in Nashville, where I qualified for the TN High School State Championship meet every year in the 200 and 500 freestyle, placed top 10 at state regionals, qualified for the Southeastern USA Swimming Championships in the 1650, and competed in numerous open water events.

I attended Western Kentucky University, co-founded the triathlon club, and graduated in 2011 with a degree in Public Relations and Political Science. After college, I worked in politics and met my husband, Tyler, on Capitol Hill. We now live in Hamilton, VA, with our two children.

In 2024, I returned to aquatics as a swim instructor at Ida Lee Recreation Center and haven’t looked back. I’m thrilled to be coaching with Machine and eager to share my passion for swimming and mentoring young athletes.

I'm a lifelong athlete with decades of experience in and around the pool. I got my start as a member of the first-ever U.S. Swimming team in Loudoun County back in the 1990s, and swimming has been a central part of my life ever since. My parents helped launch age group, year-round swimming in Leesburg, which not only shaped my own journey in the sport but also contributed to the growth of swimming in our community.

I'm certified through ASCA and USMS, with a focus on stroke development and athlete mindset. I enjoy helping swimmers build both strong technique and confidence in the water, blending my technical knowledge with a genuine love for the sport. I’m also a retired endurance athlete, having competed in triathlons and open water races. These days, I stay active through group fitness and strength training—wellness and consistency are values I aim to model for my swimmers.

Outside of coaching, I work as a Project Manager specializing in organizational change and risk management. I live in Leesburg with my husband and feel lucky to give back to my hometown through coaching and community involvement.

I’ve been coaching swimming for over nine years, including five seasons with Machine Aquatics and Snow Swimming. I also serve as the Head Coach for the Tuscarora High School Swim Team and have led that program for the past four years. It’s been an incredible journey—from swimming at Tuscarora myself to coming back as a coach and helping guide our teams to strong finishes, including a boys relay to States and our girls team winning Districts and finishing runner-up at Regionals.

Outside the high school season, I’ve coached the Ida Lee Summer Swim Team for nine years, where I work to create a positive and welcoming environment for young swimmers. My coaching goal is simple: to make practice something kids look forward to and to inspire them to stick with the sport year after year.

I earned my bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from George Mason University, with a concentration in Database Technology and Programming. I currently work full time as a software engineer, but coaching remains a true passion of mine.

When I’m not on deck, I stay active by competing in Spartan Races (5K and 10K), triathlons (Sprint and Olympic), and have completed both a half and full marathon. I’m proud to bring that same spirit of endurance and dedication to my swimmers at Machine.

Ben Graham – Age Group Coach

I am Coach Ben, and 2025 will be my third season with Machine. Swimming and coaching are two things I can’t seem to get away from—I’ve worked with athletes in learn-to-swim programs, summer leagues, high school, and club swimming. I’m also a former USA Triathlon-certified coach and have trained both youth and adult triathletes in the area.

As a coach, I focus on building strong fundamentals, fostering a positive team culture, and helping swimmers set meaningful goals. Early mornings may be tough, but I strive to make practice a place where athletes feel motivated, supported, and confident. I can’t wait to see you at the pool!

Tanya Chang – Team Administration (Loudoun County)

Email: [email protected]

I’m Coach Tanya, and I serve as the Loudoun County Administrative Assistant. I’m here to help answer questions about our Loudoun sites and meet schedules.

I’ve been coaching for over 10 years and have been with Machine for the past three. I started swimming competitively in sixth grade and went on to qualify for the Pennsylvania State Championships, YMCA Nationals, and earned medals at Division III Nationals while swimming for Johns Hopkins. I later completed my degree at Penn State and pursued graduate work at George Washington University.

What I love most about coaching is seeing swimmers smile—whether it’s from learning a new skill, reaching a goal, or doing something they didn’t think they could. I focus on making practices fun, encouraging growth, and celebrating every step forward.

Outside the pool, I enjoy photography and travel—two passions that keep me inspired and curious about the world.
