Swim Team FAQ’s

Q. Does my child need to attend all the practices to participate in the swim team?

A. No.  The coaches recommend kids attend the morning practice OR the afternoon practice (no afternoons for mini-mites).  Generally, the morning practice is less crowded, and your child will get more coaching attention.  We understand kids have camps and families go on vacation during the summer.  There is no need to tell the coaches if you will not be at practice but when the time comes to RSVP for swim meets, please let us know on the website if you will not be at a meet.

Q. I have a question for a coach. How should I get in touch with someone?

A. The coaches are happy to answer questions when they are not actively coaching (ie. during the practice times). If you have a question, please email [email protected] with your question and the coaches will respond via email or set up a time to talk in person.

Q. I have a question for the Swim Reps. How should I get in touch with someone?

A. Feel free to email any and all questions to [email protected].  If present, the Swim Reps are also happy to answer questions during practices and swim meets.  Feel free to look for us on the pool deck!  Our names are Whitney and Susan

Q. Do mini-mites swim in the swim meets?

A. Usually! Mini-mites generally swim in the last 3 meets of the season, but it is not a requirement.

Q. Do I need to volunteer for the swim meets?

A. Yes!  It takes TONS of volunteers to run a swim meet. We kindly ask families to volunteer for 3-4 sessions (one session = half of the meet approximately ~2 hrs) during the season.  We ask mini-mite families to volunteer at least at one session. If you have never volunteered at a swim meet, being a lane timer is a great place to start!  Volunteer sign-ups will be on the website. Please reach out to the Swim Reps if you have questions about volunteering.

Q. Do we need to buy a KRA team suit?

A. We recommend wearing the KRA team suit at the swim meets to show Firefish team spirit and help identify our KRA swimmers.  Most swimmers wear the team suit at the meets, but this is not a requirement.  We will be in this suit for  two or more years.  Please remember that tie-back suits are not allowed in competition.

Q. Does my child need to wear a swim cap?

A. The coaches prefer that the kids wear caps in the meet.  Not only will your child swim faster, but it also helps us all know they are a Kanawha swimmer. Caps are not required during practice, but longer hair should be tied back.

Q. How do I declare my children’s attendance for a swim meet?

A. Login to your parent account on the kraswimteam website.  Each meet has a “DECLARE” option.  Please check your calendar and declare your swimmers attendance for the upcoming season as soon as you are able.

Q. How do we get our ribbons from the swim meet?

A. All 8 & under swimmers will get a participation ribbon for swimming in the meet.  Older swimmers who place through sixth place will get ribbons for each event.  Ribbons are handed out at Tuesday practice.  If your child is not at practice on Tuesday, you can find your family’s ribbon file in the swim team bins near the starting blocks.
