UNTRAINED VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
These positions do not require any previous training
Clerk of Course Volunteers
*10 & Under Parent Wrangler: One volunteer needed for each half. The volunteer should report to the Clerk of Course area as soon as the first 10 & Under races are called to the Clerk of Course. The 10 & Under Parent Wrangler job is to keep order among the 10 & Under swimmers as they wait in the Clerk of Course area. Swimmers are called to the Clerk of Course well ahead of their race, so there can be a considerable waiting period. The 10 & Under Parent Wrangler should gather the swimmers in one area, have them sit down and wait patiently for their heat to be called.
Once the swimmer receives their lane card from the Clerk of Course, the 10 & Under Parent Wrangler helps seat the swimmers on the benches in the correct order (lane and heat). It is extemely important these swimmers stay organized as the move forward in a timely manner.
*This volunteer is only needed during 10 & Under events.
Bull Horn Operator: One volunteer needed for each half. This person will be in the Clerk of Course area and will use the bull horn to call swimmers for each race. The Clerk of Course helper will deliver the swimmer lane cards to the bull horn operator. The bull horn operator will call out each swimmer's name, working with the 10 & Under Parent Wrangler to line up the children correctly in their heats.
Clerk of Course Helper: One volunteer needed for each half. The Clerk of Course helper assists the primary Clerk of Course organize the swimmers cards into heats and lane assignments for each event. The volunteer will also assist the bull horn operator in the Clerk of Course area handing the cards to swimmers as they are called for their heats and collecting the lane cards after each race.
Runners
8 & Under Card Runners: Two volunteers needed for each half. This is only for 8 & Under events. For 8 & Under races, the 8 & Under card runners take the cards from the swimmers ready to race and ensure the swimmers stay in their proper heats/lanes as they move up to the blocks. Once the race is complete, the runners will bring the cards back to the Clerk of Course.
Bench Runners: One volunteer needed for each half. The bench runner walks swimmers from the benches in the clerk of course to the chairs behind the starting blocks and then helps the swimmers continue to move up the chairs keeping the swimmers in the right lanes and heat. This job is primarily important during the 10 & Under events though even the older swimmers may need an occasional reminder to move. The meet will only run as fast ast the heats line up.
DQ runner: One volunteer needed for each half. The DQ runner picks up DQ slips from the Strokes &Turns officials once alerted (the S&T officials will raise their hand to alert you), and then takes the slips to the Referee for his/her signature. Finally the slip is taken to the head table for recording. They will also take recorded slips to the appropriate coach.
Head Table Runner: One volunteer needed for each half. The head table runner posts the results of the meet after verification and takes a copy of the results to the announcer. The runner provides assistance to the head table as requested.
Time Sheet Runner: After each event, the Time Sheet Runner collects the time sheets from the recording timer in each lane and delivers to Head Table. During the 8 & Under events, the Time Sheet Runner will be assited by the two 8 & Under card runners. For all 8 & Under events, there will be a total of 4 runners, two 8 & Under runners at the start area and two Time Sheet Runners at the finish area. Two 8 & Under Runners will ensure the swimmers stay in their proper heats/lanes as they move up to the blocks. The two Time Sheet runners work the finish area as usual and will bring the cards timing sheets to the head table.
Head Table
Computer Assistant: One volunteer needed for each half. The computer assistant works with the computer operator at the head table and calls out card information for data entry.
Verifier: One volunteer needed for each half. Works with opposing team volunteer to verify correct data entry from cards, comparing swimmers to printouts.
Timers
Lane Timers: 12 KRA volunteers are needed for each half in an 8 lane pool; 9 KRA volunteers are needed for each half in a 6 lane pool. Lane Timers are responsible for timing the races. There will be a brief timer meeting prior to the start of the meet at which the Head Timer will give instructions and provide stopwatches. Each meet has 3 timers per lane. One of the three timers will be a recording timer who is responsible for recording all three times on the swimmer's card. A runner will collect the card from the recording timer after each race.
Ribbon Volunteers
8 & Under Heat Ribbon Volunteer: One volunteer needed for each half. Kanawha awards heat ribbons to the 8 & Under swimmer who wins each heat. The heat ribbon volunteer will visually determine the winner of each heat and give the winner a ribbon plus candy.
Ribbon Volunteer: One volunteer needed for each meet. This job is performed the day after the meet. A KRA swim representative will bring the labels and ribbons to your house at the end of the meet. The ribbon volunteer should label and organize ribbons by last name and file them in the swimmer ribbon file folders located in the aquatics shed prior to the afternoon practice on Tuesday.
8 & Under Participation Ribbon Volunteer: One volunteer needed for each meet. This job is performed the day after the meet. All 8 & Unders receive a participation ribbon for each event they swam in but did not place. A KRA swim representative will bring the labels and ribbons to your house at the end of the meet. The volunteer should label and organize ribbons by last name and file them in the swimmer ribbon file folders located in the aquatics shed prior to the afternoon practice on Tuesday.
