Jack Luken, a senior at Desert Vista High School has committed to swim at the University of Michigan. Michigan is one of the top academic schools in the country, as well as one of the top swimming schools in Division I of the NCAA. Jack will join a distance group that includes a number of Olympic Trial qualifiers. Congratulations to Jack on continuing his swimming career in college.

In the final meet of the long course season, Jack Luken placed in both of his events at the USA Summer Championships in Irvine, California. Jack qualified for four events, but only swam the two at the end of the week, since he had just finished Futures on the previous Saturday night. Gold Medal Swim Club sent nine swimmers to participate on the Western Zone All Star Team near Dallas, Texas. This was the first out of state racing experience for some of the group. The group overcame jet lag, an indoor pool with poor air quality, and a different coach to gain valuable racing experience that will help them at travel meets in the future. Jack Luken led Gold Medal with wins in the 200 free, 1500 free, and 400 free at the Futures Championship in Fargo, North Dakota. He also placed second in the 800 free. Also placing, were Clare Luken in the 100 and 200 free, Reed Lucero in the 100 breast, and Ava Elliott in the 200 fly and the 400 IM. Gold Medal achieved its highest finish ever at a State Senior Championship, with a fourth place finish. In some of the worst weather conditions the team has experienced at a summer meet, there were best times and great performances. Top performers coming off the Sectional meet were Abby Raclaw, Bobby Sander, and Markus Quillinan, who improved best times done a week earlier. Colorado Stanley performed three best times. Jack Luken led Gold Medal Swim Club to a 19th place finish at the Western Zone Sectionals. Jack scored in the top eight in 400 free, 800 free, and 1500 free. The Gold Medal Swim Club finished an amazing Age Group State meet with a second place finish behind SAC, who has 550 swimmers to our 90 swimmers. We also finished ahead of much larger teams like Rio and Phoenix and Westside. When I started this team around five years ago, I didn't envision this type of finish at the State level.
