Coaches and Directors
Thor Larson has more than 20 years of coaching experience and a strong record of building programs and developing athletes to the national level. His coaching philosophy centers on creating a positive, joyful training environment where swimmers, parents, and coaches are all visibly engaged in the process of improvement, while also achieving measurable competitive excellence.
National-Level Athlete Development
• Guided multiple Olympic Trials qualifiers across different
programs.
• Known for progressing athletes from age group through to
national-level competition.
Program Recognition & Growth
• Built two programs (Tsunami and iNspire) from the ground up
into nationally recognized clubs.
• Earned Silver Medal Club Excellence recognition for iNspire
despite its size, a testament to the quality of athlete development
and coaching.
Head Coaching Roles
• AGUA (New York City): Head Age Group Coach and Aquatic
Manager for 4.5 years, overseeing three assistants and contributing
to one of the nation’s premier age-group programs.
• Kansas City Blazers: Co-Head Coach for 4 years, coaching 6
athletes to Junior Nationals (including 2 finalists).
• Tsunami Swim Team (Kansas City): Founder and Head Coach,
developing swimmers from their first strokes all the way to the
Olympic Trials.
• iNspire Swim Team (Omaha, NE): Founder and Head Coach for
9.5 years, growing the team from 5 swimmers to 105 pre-pandemic. In
2024, iNspire became the smallest club in the country to earn USA
Swimming Silver Medal status with only 49 registered athletes; the
next smallest Silver Medal club had 210 swimmers (Tsunami Swim
Team). At iNspire, Thor developed swimmers who achieved Olympic
Trials cuts, USA Swimming Top 10 rankings, and
NCAA Division I Top 10 recruits.
YMCA Leadership
Thor also brings a strong administrative background with his
experience as CEO and Executive Director of the Grand Island YMCA,
where membership grew from 3,600 to 7,000, annual revenue improved
from $860,000 to over $2.3M, and the endowment grew 220% under his
direction. His analytical nature served him well as he relied on
KPIs and cost-benefit data to drive results that furthered the
organization’s mission and goals.
Brian Wingert has been coaching for Wichita Swim Club since August 2011. He coaches White Squad and also serves as the Director of Business Operations as well as the Executive Director of Wichita Swim School.
Coach Brian is from Peabody, KS, where he began swimming at age 6 and swam for 10 years for the Peabody-Burns Super Swimmers. The 200 Medley Relay is his favorite race to swim, and breaststroke is his favorite stroke to swim. His favorite things about coaching swimming are watching swimmers develop and continuously improve and (of course) the good, free food in the hospitality room at swim meets.
Brian received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Wichita State University in 2014, and his Associate of Science at Butler County Community College in 2011.
Brian is an avid golfer and spends much of his free time on a golf course. He also enjoys running, writing and recording music, appreciating and creating art, and reading. He is proud of his younger brother who is in the National Guard.
Coach Brian is a fan of all the Kansas City Sports teams. If he could spend a day with any Olympic swimmer, he’d spend time with Olympic freestyler Anthony Ervin so the two of them could talk about philosophy, music and tattoos.
