Bruce moved to Battle Creek from Hawaii in 1969. He loved surfing and body surfing. At Lakeview he was encouraged to swim by (then Lakeview HS Coach) Dave Digit and he has loved swimming ever since. He swam 4 years at Lakeview under Bill Brandell and 2 years at KCC. During the summer he lifeguarded and taught swim lessons at Riverside Swim Club with Bill Barnard. His first coaching experince was with the Battle Creek Y Swim Club and the Battle Creek Swim Club with Chris Harrington. After graduating from Michigan State with a degree in Education, he continued club coaching until he took over the HS boys and girls varsity swim teams in Marshall. In 1985 he became the assistant boys coach at Lakeview. He accepted a teaching job in the Battle Creek Public Schools and took over the boys and girls middle school swim teams at Northwestern Junior High. Later he became the assistant girls Varsity swim coach at BCC with Corky Baker. Bruce's took a few years off of coaching to spend more time with his growing family (enjoying boating and skiing). His kids naturally gravitated towards swimming where they all swam at Lakeview. His son Ryan was the head coach of CCW and one of the first coaches of Lakeview Aquatic Club. It was during this time when Bruce got back into coaching, with both CCW and LAC. After his kids graduated high school, he again took a break from coaching until 2019, where he became the assistant coach with the boys team. Recently he was asked by Coach Lott to be a part of our Cereal City Swimming School. He says "I love it!! I am on the same page with Coach Lott and I want this to become one of the best learn to swim programs in the state!". Bruce goes on to say, "I look forward to teaching your children to be safe in the water and helping them learn to swim." Bruce has been married to his wife, Linda, for almost 43 years and has 4 kids and 10 grandchildren.

**High School swimmers will provide assistance to these lead instructors, as “in water” helpers. The numbers of in-water helpers depends on the group level. Our goal is to provide the safest possible experience for the students.
