Tryouts

To be eligible to tryout, athletes must have completed all information on DASD’s FamilyID website (including, but not limited to, the submission of a physical) - and DASD must have approved that information - prior to tryouts.  No exceptions.

The tryout date for the DWHS Dive Team is Tuesday, November 19, 2024 from 8:00 - 9:30 pm at the Lionville Community YMCA, 100 Devon Drive, Exton, PA 19341.  Please contact Coach Kelsey with any questions or issues.

Making The Team

Previous springboard dive experience is not required, but any student who plans to dive must be comfortable jumping off the diving board forward and backward, be able to dive in head first off the diving board, and be able to swim down and touch the bottom of the deep end. Dives will quickly need to progress to somersaulting and twisting in order for an athlete to be eligible for competition. Practices are shared with Downingtown East Dive team each week.

If you are involved in another sport or have a job that interferes with practice, please understand that earning a spot in a meet each week may be difficult. Please consider your schedule when taking on this commitment.

Dive Team Practice Schedule

Dryland will be on Monday and Wednesday from 3:15 - 4:15 pm at the Lionville Community YMCA.

Board Time will be on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 - 9:00 pm at the Lionville Community YMCA.

Competition and Scoring

For each meet, 3 girls and 3 boys that demonstrate skill in completing 5 dives plus the required dive for the week will be entered in the diving competition at the coaches’ discretion. Therefore, each diver will perform 6 dives at a meet, which the judges score using a scale of 10 to 0 at 1/2 point increments as follows:

  • Exceptional: 9 to 10
  • Excellent: 7.5 to 8.5
  • Good: 6 to 7
  • Satisfactory: 4.5 to 5
  • Deficient: 2.5 to 4
  • Unsatisfactory: 0.5 to 2
  • Failed: 0

The points from each judge are added, and then multiplied by the dive's degree of difficulty to arrive at the point total for each dive. The diver with the highest cumulative number of points places first.

PIAA Certified Officials are present at all competitions to enforce the technical rules of diving that ensure the competition is fair and equitable.
