VOLUNTEERING

As most of you know, it takes a village to run a swim team!  Each family will be required to volunteer to help run home meets.  Based upon the size of the team, the number of volunteer slots per family will be determined each year.  The more hands that we have on deck, the more the meets run smoothly.

Below are the positions that do not require training:

  • Dive Scorer - Needed only for the dive portion of the meet, which is about half-way through the meet.  The Dive Scorer records the diving scores from the Officials and calculates each diver's final score and the overall results.
  • Announcer - Announces each event and the athletes' names prior to the start of the event.  Also announces the score at the end and communicates any announcments to the spectators.
  • Photographer - Takes photos of as many Downingtown West athletes as possible, both individually and together.
  • Timers - Requires use of a stopwatch, which is very easy to learn.  We need 7 timers for each home meet - one timer for each of the 6 lanes and 1 back-up timer in case someone's stopwatch malfunctions, etc.

        The following positions require training:

  • Meet Manager (or “Scorer”) - Works at the Scoring Table.  Makes adjustments to the swimmer line-up in the computer system, generates results from the Colorado timing system into the scoring software (Hy-Tek Meet Manager), makes adjustments to the scoring pursuant to the direction of the Officials, records disqualifications, and verifies results.  This position is not overly complicated and you can shadow someone before operating the laptop yourself.  In any event, we usually have 2 Meet Managers at every meet so you should never be on your own.  You will also be given a manual.  Please see a board member if you are previously trained in this position or if you are interested in learning about it.  This position is a great way to be on deck with the kids!

In addition, we have season-long volunteer positions each year.  Below is a description of these positions:

  • Senior Recognition Meet Coordinator:  The Senior Recognition meet is held each year to honor our senior swimmers and divers. The individual is responsible for coordinating the efforts of the committee. Committee members should not be senior parents.
  • Banquet Committee:  The end of the season team banquet is held in March or April of each year.  This committee is responsible for handling and coordinating the details of the banquet.
