Downingtown West at Day #2 of the PIAA District One Championship Meet

Maria Martin

As they say…last day, fast day. Yesterday was the final day of the Division 1 Championship meet. Our Whippets swam amazing!

For the boys, sophomore Shane Martin dropped 1.43 seconds on his 100 backstroke to go a speedy 53.13 (15th place). That time also earned him a new YMCA Nationals cut in that event.

For the girls, senior sprinter Leah Lacovara dropped time in the 100 freestyle (53.25) and finished 16th overall! Then, our girls crushed the 500 freestyle. Junior Abby Harlan dropped 1.46 seconds to achieve a personal best time of 5:18.85. Our sophomore girls – Morgan Harlan and Ellie McNamara – also dropped time on the 500 freestyle and even made it to the podium! Morgan Harlan dropped 4.39 seconds, picked up a new YMCA Nationals cut, and placed 6th overall (5:06.36). Ellie McNamara dropped 6.55 seconds and placed 5th overall (5:05.02). She also set a new girls 500 freestyle record for our team (old record was 5:07.43). Freshman Keira Carmella matched her best time for the 100 breaststroke (1:06.74) and hustled her way to a 14th place finish. Finally, our girls 400 freestyle relay dropped 2 seconds and made it to the podium with a time of 3:34.07 (4th place). All of the girls had crazy splits during this exciting relay!

Many thanks to Coach Stacy and Coach Shane for putting in long hours over the last 2 days! We are fortunate to have such dedicated and caring coaches.
