DWHS v. Kennett Meet
Another exciting day for West in the meet against Kennett High School today! This time, the girls won their meet and the boys lost. We continue to see improvement in our swimmers and divers each week – even when they are tired – which is equally important as winning or losing.
The girl swimmers swept multiple events with a first, second, and third place finish. Those events included the 200 IM (senior Sydney Martin, junior Ella Bice, and sophomore Mary Kate Johnson), the 100 butterfly (senior Callie Ritter, sophomore Abby Harlan, and sophomore Seraphim Rahardjo), and the 100 backstroke (junior Addy Compher, junior Caroline Cusack, and freshman Morgan Harlan). Equally solid performances included events where the girls placed first, third, and fourth. Those events included the 200 freestyle (freshman Ellie McNamara, sophomore Cooper Jones, and junior Skylar Bailey) and the 100 freestyle (junior Caroline Cusack, sophomore Mary Kate Johnson, and freshman Allie Leamy). In addition, the girls took second and third place on 500 freestyle (junior Leah Lacovara and senior Sydney Martin). On the 50 freestyle, senior Chayse Nunciato and freshman Katie Goodby placed second and fifth. Then, on the 100 breaststroke, senior Chayse Nunciato, freshman Miranda Marino, and senior Anya Zebluim finished second, fourth, and fifth. Our female relays did equally as well. Both the 200 medley relays and the 200 freestyle relays placed first and second. Finally, the girls 400 freestyle relays finished first and third.
As for the boys, senior Zach Mourar and junior Logan Seiss came in second and third on the 200 freestyle. On the 200 IM, the Whippet boys had a strong showing with freshman Shane Martin, sophomore Henry Dennin, and senior Josh Miller coming in first, second, and fourth. For the 50 freestyle, freshman Sean Borkowski, junior Conner Cianciulli, and senior Jack Taylor finished third, fourth, and fifth. After diving, senior Zach Mourar had a first place finish in the 100 freestyle and senior Jack Taylor placed fifth. On the 500 freestyle, brothers Jack Sheldon (junior) and Alexander Sheldon (freshman) finished third and fourth. Freshman Shane Martin and senior Josh Miller then placed second and fourth on the 100 backstroke. On the 100 breaststroke, seniors Ike Durkin and Nate Reynolds finished second and fourth. Finally, the boys 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays placed second and the boys 200 freestyle relays placed second and third.
As for our divers, West had a great showing against Kennett Square! Sophomore Nolan Dobry, junior Micah Russell, and sophomore Will Vaughen battled it out against Kennett's one male diver. Despite ending up in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, all 3 of our boys threw some great divers! Nolan's front double and reverse were his strongest dives of the day. Micah has been working hard to nail down his voluntaries as he builds up a higher DD list; the height he gets off the board is fantastic! Will continues to impress everyone with his willingness to try new dives. Junior Grace McNamara and freshman Mia Enterline both had a really strong showing against their Kennett opponent. Earning 1st and 3rd, both ladies had standout performances! All of Grace's dives were super clean but her inward dive impressed everyone, including the judges. Mia had one of her strongest meets of the season. Her back flip half twist and front dive were her strongest dives of the day. Way to go, divers!
Finally, a shout out to Jill Bice for being the Meet Manager today. She shadowed the position at the last meet and ran the computer at this meet. We are still in need of others to shadow the Meet Manager and Colorado Operator positions – please consider doing so. You will not be left on your own – we try to have two people at the table for each position so you can work together. Feel free to reach out to Maria Dennin (Colorado Operator/Meet Manager) and Maria Martin (Meet Manager) with any questions, or just sign up on TeamUnify to shadow these positions at the next home meet.
Our next meet is against Henderson High School on Thursday, January 19th at 7:30 pm. We hope to see you there!
