DWHS v. Henderson Meet Recap

Maria Martin

It is not often that we have a storm delay during a meet in January!  However, our female Whippets used it as an opportunity to catch "lightening in a bottle" and came back to defeat a strong Henderson girls team by six points!  West's boys lost their meet, but they had great swims nonetheless.

For the girls, freshman Ellie McNamara came out swinging with first place finishes in both the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle, thereby improving her District consideration times in both events.  Junior Leah Lacovara displayed her speed with first place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, and clinching the victory for the 400 freestyle relay with a nail-biting finish on her anchor leg of the race.  Senior Sydney Martin also got the team rolling at the end of the meet by outhustling the competition on the final lap of the 100 backstroke for a first place finish.  She also placed third on the 200 IM.

Many other swims contributed to the girls’ victory last night.  For the freshman, Morgan Harlan had strong swims in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle to finish third in both events and Miranda Marino secured points for the Whippets by finishing fifth in the 50 freestyle.  For the sophomores, Abby Harlan had a fantastic night and finished second in both the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly and Mary Kate Johnson finished fifth in the 200 IM.  For the juniors – one of our more robust groups – Ella Bice finished third in the 50 freestyle, Addy Compher finished third in the 100 backstroke (to get us much needed points) and fifth in the 500 freestyle, Caroline Cusack finished third in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 100 backstroke, and Skylar Bailey finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke.  For our seniors, Chayse Nunciato finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke and Callie Ritter finished third in the 100 butterfly.  Finally, the 200 medley relay (Sydney Martin, Callie Ritter, Seraphim Rahardjo, and Ella Bice) finished second, the 200 freestyle relays finished first (Caroline Cusack, Ellie McNamara, Ella Bice, and Leah Lacovara) and third (Abby Harlan, Skylar Bailey, Morgan Harlan, and Chayse Nunciato), and the 400 freestyle relays finished first (Ellie McNamara, Caroline Cusack, Ella Bice, and Leah Lacovara) and third (Sydney Martin, Addy Compher, Mary Kate Johnson, and Callie Ritter).

For the boys, our relays did well with second place finishes in all events:  200 medley relay (Shane Martin; Henry Dennin; Logan Seiss; and Zach Mourar); 200 freestyle relay (Logan Seiss, Ike Durkin, Henry Dennin, and Zach Mourar); and 400 freestyle relay (Logan Seiss, Henry Dennin, Shane Martin, and Zach Mourar).  For the seniors, Zach Mourar finished second in the 100 butterfly (with a time drop), Josh Miller finished fourth in 100 freestyle (with a whopping 6+ second time drop), Ike Durkin finished fourth in the 200 IM (with a huge 5.62 second time drop), and Nathan Reynolds finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke (with an almost 1 second time drop).  For the juniors, Logan Seiss took second in the 100 breaststroke, Connor Cianciulli finished fourth in 50 freestyle (with a time drop) and fifth in the 500 freestyle, and Nick Gaasche finished fifth in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.  For the sophomores, Henry Dennin placed second in the 500 freestyle and Will Vaughen placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke.  Finally, for the freshman, Shane Martin finished second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 freestyle and Sean Borkowski finished fourth in the 100 fly (with a time drop).

West’s divers had a great night at WCY against Henderson!  Sophomore Reilly Durkin, junior Grace McNamara, sophomore Nolan Dobry, sophomore Will Vaughn, and junior Micah Russell all threw their best dives.  Grace was able to earn points for the girls team by securing 3rd place and Nolan was able to come in 2nd.  This goes to show how tough our competition was!  Reilly’s reverse dive was stunning and Grace’s clean entries played a huge role in her high scores.  Nolan, Will, and Micah all had some great dives last night.  Nolan’s back dive was stunning, and Will threw an inward flip for the very first time just so he could compete for his team.  Micah’s inward flip and inward one and a half were standouts amongst his dives last night.  Considering the fact that we had to break for half an hour in the middle of the meet, all five of our divers showed some real focus and grit to finish out the meet strong.

West’s next meet is on Monday, January 23rd at 3:30 pm against Abington High School.  It is a home meet so we hope to see you there.  Also, there are many open volunteer spots on TeamUnify for this meet so please sign up and support our swimmers and divers!
