West District Meet Recap
West had a very strong showing at the District meets for both swimming and diving! We have many reasons to be proud as a team.
The District meet for diving took place last week. Sophomore Nolan Dobry had a fantastic first District appearance. He was calm and composed, and clearly happy to be there. Nolan’s dives all went well; he is one of West’s more consistent divers! His front double and inward one and a half were some of his best dives of the night. We have already started talking about what new dives he can learn to be able to place even higher at Districts next year!
As for our swimmers, to say our team did great is an understatement. Every single swimmer and relay dropped time at the District meet! It’s not often that you get to make that statement.
On Day 1, freshman Ellie McNamara dropped .87 seconds on her 200 freestyle. Junior Leah Lacovara dropped .57 seconds on her 50 freestyle to take 6th place (and podium)! Finally, our girls 200 freestyle relay (Ellie McNamara, Cooper Jones, Mary Kate Johnson, and Leah Lacovara) dropped .87 seconds.
On Day 2, junior Leah Lacovara .90 seconds on her 100 freestyle. On the 500 freestyle, freshman Morgan Harlan dropped a whopping 13.01 seconds, senior Sydney Martin dropped 5.64 seconds, and freshman Ellie McNamara dropped 8.52 seconds (for a 8th place finish to podium!) On the 100 backstroke, senior Sydney Martin dropped .54 seconds and sophomore Cooper Jones dropped .61 seconds. On the 400 freestyle relay (Ellie McNamara, Ella Bice, Morgan Harlan, and Leah Lacovara), the girls dropped 3.54 seconds.
Finally, our boy swimmer, freshman Shane Martin, dropped .95 seconds on his 100 backstroke.
Congratulations to these athletes and many thanks to our coaches for the long hours that they have put in over the season! Fingers crossed that some of our athletes make it to the State meet. We are also looking forward to getting together as an entire group at the banquet – stay tuned for further details. Way to go Whippets!
