The annual Caribbean Gems SXM scholastic meets were held on Sunday, and the schools were greatly bolstered by Carib Swim Team student athletes. In the elementary meet, CST swimmers won 20 of 29 available gold medals in individual events, and 43 of 87 medals overall. Carib Swim Team traveled with nine swimmers to Martinique over the weekend, and shredded some old personal records along with team records! Joey Schvartz led the way, winning all eight of his events. Matias Piazza brought home one gold medal and two silver medals, and Saphir Thomas acquired a whole set with one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal. An amazing 23 team records were broken. CST swimmer Matias Piazza traveled last weekend to Canada for the Junior Senior Quebec Cup, and performed very admirably. He finalled in his 100 fly, and all six of his swims were new 15 year old boys CST team records. His 50 and 100 fly were overall (Senior) team records. Personal bests and team records were aplenty at the annual Carib Swim Team Sweetheart Classic, this year sponsored for the first time by Marine Management and Consulting. Local teams Super Splash Swim Team, Dolphins Swim Team, and host Carib Swim Team all enjoyed success. For Carib Swim Team, this came with four new team records. Windward Islands Bank sponsored Carib Swim Team’s first hosted swim meet of 2023, a Pentathlon format. The Pentathlon meet is different than most meets, in that instead of awarding each event for each age group, each swimmer swims five events and the winner is the lowest sum of all five events. Eight Carib Swim Team athletes traveled to Guadeloupe this last weekend for the annual Shark Week invitational meet. And although we were small, we were mighty! In the first meet of the year, seven of the eight swimmers made appearances on the awards podium, with Saphir Thomas earning 1 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze medal. Three Carib Swim Team swimmers did their team proud over the weekend in Martinique. Joey Schvartz, Saphir Thomas, and Matias Piazza combined for thirteen new team records, despite some issues with their travel. Joey set new marks for boys 12-year-old 100 breast, which also broke the Senior record. He reset the 12-year-old boys 800 free as well, in a new 'AAAA' time. Sisters Taffi and Abbi Illis once again represented Sint Maarten at the FINA short courseWorld Championships, held in Melbourne Australia last week, and both did quite well. Taffi swam to a best time in her 50 butterfly with a 31.16, finishing 3rd in her heat. She also performed a 29.77 in her 50 free. Abbi swam a huge best time in her 100 free, with a 1:09.62. Congratulations to both sisters!
