Club Warriors Rock the Montreal Olympic Stadium Pool
May 19-23, 2022
Club Warriors travelled to Montreal for a 3-day competition. This meant it was the first time in 3 years that we got on a bus as a team and competed. 48 Swimmers, 3 Coaches and 2 Chaperones made the trip.
On the drive up to Montreal, it was explained what would make this trip successful for the team. Obviously, success in the pool can be measured by the number of Personal Best times, Finalists and Medals. It was also explained that working as a team, adhering to the bus schedule, meal schedules, curfews etc., and supporting and respecting everyone was the key to having a successful meet outside of the pool. The coaches are proud to say that, on both accounts, we had a very successful trip.
Because of the Pandemic experience (which is not over yet), most of the swimmers on the trip did not have the benefit of being shown the ropes by the senior swimmers on how to behave, how to prepare to race, or even how to cheer at a meet like this. Head Coach Russ chose two swimmers from the Elite group to act as Team Captains for the meet to help the inexperienced Warriors. They would be responsible to keep the swimmers focused on the competition, leading all the dry land (activation) sessions, and coordinating all the cheering during the meet. Elite swimmers Jessica Dreghici (14) and Evan Hodson (15) did an incredible job as Captains. The coaching staff recognize the importance of a captain’s role and cannot thank our two Captains enough for the work they did. Our Team’s cheering was the best in the meet. If the meet gave out a “spirit” award, CW would have had a landslide victory!
Aside from competing against over 800 swimmers entered in the meet, CW swimmers were competing against themselves: the Girls against the Boys. Swimmers could earn team points by swimming a Best Time, making Finals, swimming faster in Finals than in Prelims, and of course, winning Medals. It was a tight battle for the entire meet with everyone engaged because everyone could contribute to their team's success. In the end, it was close, but the Girls came away with a well-deserved victory (Girls: 277, Boys:250). Maybe next year boys!
We also had a successful meet because of our amazing team of adults, led by Karen Marton (mother of Kaitlin) and Tammy Cumming (mother of Elle). Along with the coaching staff – Connor Watson, Emily Masters, and Russ Franklin. All these people deserve a ton of thanks from the Club and the parents of every swimmer on the bus. A personal, special thank you to Karen who had been working on this trip for 3 months to make sure it was successful as it turned out to be.
