Joining the Piranhas Competitive Programs

Thank you for your interest in the Piranhas Competitive Swimming Program. Piranhas has been fostering excellence in the sport of competitive swimming for 30 years. Throughout these years, our athletes have proudly represented our community at Local, Regional, Provincial and National events.  We pride ourselves in providing opportunities for swimmers to develop their full potential in the sport of competitive swimming.

Competitive swimming is a great way for your child to continue to develop their love of the water. It is here that they will develop lasting friendships and solid life skills such as time management, goal setting, discipline and determination. Your swimmer can transition into competitive swimming once they have a good knowledge of the four competitive strokes and some endurance training.

Every new swimmer must go through an assessment prior to being accepted into the competitive program. The assessment is used to determine if the swimmer is ready for the program and what level does the swimmer best match. Coaches are looking for swimmers that are able to achieve the following:

  • Swim a proficient 25m Frontcrawl and Backstroke.
  • Swim 25m of Breaststroke with good technique.
  • Swim 25m of Dolphin kick and demonstrate good knowledge of Butterfly.
  • Perform a standing dive into deep water.
  • Tread water for 30 seconds.
  • Forward and backward roll in the water.
  • Achieve a underwater streamline.
  • Make changes to technique upon instruction.

Swimmers will be assessed for admission into either our Competitive program or our I Can Swim program.  Usually swimmers that have never swam competitively before and are under the age of 6 will be assessed for our I Can Swim program.  All new swimmers over the age of 7 will be assessed for our competitive program. The assessment will take about 15 - 20 minutes.

Indivdual swimmer assessments for this season can be arranged by emailing [email protected] or call the office 780 538 0732
