Class of 2022- Senior Spotlight: Alejandro Alvarez

Victoria Martinez

Alejandro Alvarez

Starting as a very young six-year-old with Swim America, Alejandro Alvarez moved on to CSSC’s Red Group and then accelerated through Mullins and the Aquatic Complex age group teams before landing with National Team.  Alvarez’ many years with Coral Springs Swim Club have provided the opportunity for numerous fond memories, and when asked to name a favorite, Alejandro chose three of them.  Firstly, he truly enjoyed the training trip that the senior swimmers took to Asheville, N.C. in the summer of 2019 and excitedly mentioned the white-water rafting experience they had during that week.

He also references the 2019 T2 Norris Foundation Meet in Naples, for good reason.  During that meet, swimming as a 14-year-old, Alvarez competed in five events, winning gold in three of them.  His victories in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter freestyle events cemented his status as a premier freestyler for Coral Springs Swim Club. As a side note, he also finished fourth in the 200-meter individual medley and fifth in the 1500-meter freestyle, where in that event he competed against swimmers much older than him. Lastly, he mentions the 2021 Michael Lohberg Invitational where Alvarez, competing in the 50-meter freestyle preliminaries, achieved a USA Swimming Futures cut, which allowed him to swim that event, along with two bonus events at the Futures meet in Huntsville, Alabama later that summer. He was excited and elated to achieve that difficult goal time.

Alejandro Alvarez swam for four years at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and his best remembrance is of the team bonding that occurred during his sophomore year, when many CSSC members swam for Douglas.  The dinners out after swim meets with the older swimmers were a highlight of his high school swim team experience.  Starting this fall, Alejandro will be attending the University of Florida as a Business major, and plans to swim for UF’s Gator Swim Club.  He chose UF due to the strength of academics as well as the opportunity to continue to swim for one of the strongest college club programs in the country.  He will miss the relationships he has made with Coral Springs Swim Club, but knows that he will be able to come home often and continue to cultivate those relationships.  Congratulations to Alejandro Alvarez!
