The Westfield Area Y Devilfish Swim Team hosted the 17th Annual DEVILFISH CLASSIC Invitational Swim Meet (DFC) at the Wallace Pool on October 14. Meet Director Peggy Oster praised the coaches and the DFC committee chairpeople for all their organization and hard work. She was pleased the meet ran smoothly and was once again a success. The DFC not only provides the Devilfish and visiting teams with an opportunity to compete early in the short course swim season, but also serves as the team's biggest fund raising effort. Devilfish Caroline Baldwin and Carly Whitmer have been named to USA Swimming's 2011-2012 Scholastic All-America Team. Baldwin is a junior at Westfield High School. Whitmer is a senior at Mount St. Mary Academy. USA Swimming annually recognizes eligible members throughout the nation who have completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade. These student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and achieve the required time standard in a single event. This year USA Swimming named 1,226 student-athletes to the team. The Devilfish team has concluded the summer long course (LC) season. During LC, swimmers adjust to swimming a 50 meter or ‘long course’ instead of the traditional 25 yard course. For many swimmers, LC serves as an opportunity to stay in shape, but for others it also provides some challenging summer competition. The team competed in five meets held at Rutgers University’s Sonny Werblin Pool.
