Taffi Illis and Arianna Lont are in Budapest, Hungary, representing Sint Maarten at the World Championships! Both girls have two events. Arianna swam 400 free on Saturday morning, with a new best time by three seconds. Coming up, Taffi swims 50 fly on Thursday, while Arianna also swims on Thursday with her 800 free. Taffi will finish Sint Maarten's meet with 50 free on Friday.
As the 2021/22 season comes to an end, CST held a party to celebrate our successes over the last few months. There were awards, great food, and pool games! There was a lot to celebrate. Since September, CST swimmers have set 76 new team records! The island saw it's first CARIFTA champion, with Joey winning four events in Barbados! Carib Swim Team's second annual Swim-4-Fun(ds) was once again very successful, bringing in just over $6,700. The money will be used for open water swimming equipment, with the goal being to grow ocean swimming on the island. Declan Boyd was the biggest earner, brining in over $2,500! He chose the cell phone as his prize. Nikki Grandtner ($1,050), Matias Piazza ($500), Gigi Cai ($330) and Nicolas Piazza ($250) were the other big prize winners. Carib Swim Team, for the second year in a row, dominated the Sint Maarten Aquatic Federation Championship Meet on Sunday 12th June. The meet was kindly sponsored by Marine Management and Consulting, and acts as an island wide ‘national’ championship for swimming. Carib Swim Team finished with 913 points, followed by Super Splash Swim Team with 170 points. Several CST swimmers took part in the annual Boardwalk Triathlon on Sunday, and helped their teams to some high rankings. Matias Piazza was the fastest swimmer of the day in the Olympic distance, helping his relay team to a 2nd place finish. Saphir Thomas was third out of the water, and the fastest female, leading the way to her team's first place finish. Carib Swim Team held it's second Swim-4-Fun(ds), the biggest fundraiser of the year for the team, on Sunday. Dozens of swimmers swam laps and ate pancakes. CST wishes to thank the fundraising committee, and all parents who helped make it a success! Prizes and final results will be coming soon.
Taffi Illis, Abbi Illis, and Arianna Lont all attended the Tornadoes Swim Team Invitational in Kingston over the weekend. The meet acted as a qualifier for the FINA World Championships, with Taffi and Arianna earning spots for that competition, coming in June in Budapest, Hungary. Abbi swam four best times, earning two second place finishes and one first place finish. Arianna earned three best times, and went home with one second place and two third place medals. At the last meet before the Sint Maarten Aquatic Federation Championship meet, CST swimmers showed they are ready to step up! Many new team records and time standards were set. Four new team records were reset by Joey Schvartz (12) in 50 back, 100 back, 100 breast, and 200 breast. Saphir Thomas (13) broke three records. Four Carib Swim Team swimmers competed in the Le défi des Antennes Triathlon on the French Side on Sunday 1st May. The event was organized by Saint-Martin Extreme Runners. Each of the swimmers competed as part of a relay, so only did the 1K swimming leg. Matias Pizza was the first out of the water (11:32), followed by Saphir Thomas (12:03). Nicolas Piazza finished third in the swimming (14:21), and Brandon Girier Dufournier came out of the water sixth (14:40). Way to represent!
The Sint Maarten Aquatic Federation held a long course travel camp in Curacao on April 25 - 29, 2022. This was a first, and involved swimmers from all three teams on our island. In all 17 swimmers took part, including eight from CST. The week provided a lot of education and training, with most days having two water sessions and two classroom session. There is no doubt that swimming in Sint Maarten is better for it.
