Coaching Staff
Jack Bierie Head Coach

Coach Jack joined the CGBD staff in 2005 after coaching with several other teams in the area.  As a swimmer, Coach Jack achieved Top 16 national rankings, reached the finals at National Championships, and participated in the 1984 Olympic Trials. 

Coach Jack brings over 30 years of experience to the team. He has served many rolls within the CGBD organzation structure.  During his tenure, he has developed swimmers who have qualified for the USA Swimming National Junior Team, Olympic Trials, as well as one swimmer who participated in 2007 FINA World Championships. Coach Jack moves mentoring younger coaches.

Coach Jack loves mountain biking, surfing, off-road triathlons, and camping.  He currently lives in Williamsburg with wife Irene and their two dogs.   

Jihan Minson Director of Operations and Dolphin Swims

Coach Jihan coached for Eastern Express Swimming and Typhoon Aquatics before joining CGBD in 2006.  She was Head Developmental Coach, Age Group Coach, Assistant Office Manager, Accounts Manager and lessons site supervisor\before stepping away to be a stay at home mom.

Jihan returned to the CGBD coaching staff in 2019 as an age group coach before becoming the Director of Dolphin Swims SwimAmerica program in 2021. Coach Jihan currently serves on the Virginia Swimming Board of Directors as the Disability/Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chair and the SwimAmerica Advisory Board with the America Swim Coaches Association.  

Jihan grew up swimming in NJ and still holds several pool records.  In college, Jihan swam for the University of Rhode Island before graduating with a degree in Marine Resource Management.  Jihan was a marine mammal rescue specialist in Conneticut and Virginia before committing to swimming full time.

Coach Jihan is the Hampton chapter Vice President of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. where she volunteers her time to make a difference in her the community.  She also serves her community by serving on the Board of Directors for Pugs U Gotta Save. She currently lives in Carrollton with her husband, children, and three dogs. 

McKenzie Smith Lead Strength Coach, Lead Seahawk Coach

Coach McKenzie joined the CGBD staff in 2017.  She swam for Coach Jack and Steve at Typhoon Aquatics and CGBD.   Coach McKenzie enjoys coaching all ages from summer league to high school swimming.  Coach Mckenzie was a middle school teacher before transitioning to swimming full time.  

She serves as the CGBD Virginia Swimming delegate and meet entry coordinator.  Coach Mckenzie can also be found in the weight room with our middle school and high school swimmers. 

When she’s not on deck, Coach McKenzie is enjoying anything outdoors with her husband and dog, Gizmo. 

Sharon Baldwin Team Administrator
Danyelle Travis Dolphin Lead Coach, Asst. Dir. of DS

Coach Danyelle was a developmental and age group coach with CGBD from 2005-2008.  She stepped away from the pool deck, but returned in 2018.  As a swimmer, Coach Danyelle swam for CGBD and PAST.  She began teaching lessons and coaching at Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center during the summers while attending Kenyon College. While obtaining her law degree at Capital University Law School, Danyelle coached for Greater Columbus Swim Team of Ohio and New Albany Aquatics. 

Currently Coach Danyelle works with the age group programs and serves as the lead site supervisor with Dolphin Swims.  She is ASCA Level 1 and Level 2 certified, as well as Swim Angelfish certified.  Coach Danyelle serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the Virginia Board of Swimming. 

During the day, Coach Danyelle serves as an instructional lead and high school English teacher in Suffolk, Virginia.  She is presently working on her Masters in Administration and Supervision. She lives in Yorktown, Virginia.  

 

Matthew Creelman Dolphin Coach

Coach Matt joined the CGBD staff in spring 2020 after coaching for SEVA for many years.  Coach Matt began his swimming career in LaGrange, Illinois and continued competing through high school and his four years in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. 

Coach Matt and his family settled in the area upon his retirement from the Coast Guard in 2009.  He has been involved in coaching with area swim teams since that time.  Coach Matt enjoys working with our developmental and age groups swimmers. 

His three children all swam for CGBD and his daughter is currently one of the Dolphin Swims instructors.  Coach Matt currently lives in Yorktown with his wife.

Stephen Hennessy Masters Coach

Coach Steve has always been a proud advocate for swimming as a competitive sport and as a means for maintaining fitness.  As a swimmer, Coach Steve was a high school and collegiate All-American.  He even qualified for the 1972 Olympic Trials.  Coach Steve initially worked for CGBD in 1980s developing Senior and National Team swimmers.  Steve rejoined the CGBD coaching staff in 2000 as a full-time age group coach.  In 2001, Steve signed on as Age Group Head Coach and Team Administrator taking on the administrative functions of the team, ultimately becoming the Head Coach in 2008.  During his tenure as a coach, Steve has developed several nationally ranked Top-16 swimmers, Junior National qualifiers, Senior National qualifiers, National Age Group record holders, and Olympic Trial qualifiers.  Coach Steve has been a zones coach and in 2006 and 2007 he was Age Group Coach of the Year.  Coach Steve lives in Yorktown with his wife Sandy.
